Another N47 Engine Sound Test...

Post by OManger » Sat Apr 23, 2016 1:50 pm

Hey all,

Apologies for my first post asking for help straight away!

So, i bought this car (09 - 118D M Sport) about a month ago and for some odd reason i didn't really take notice of this noise until someone mentioned it the other day. (Just showing off the purchase to a friend of mine.)

I dont beleive it sounds like a timing chain issue as ive listen to 10's of engines with that issue but i am seriously curious to what the noise is and whether it needs repairing etc.

If you have any spare time it would be great if you could take listen at the link below and let me know what your thoughts are.

Cheers,

Sounds like a normal N47 diesel engine, just like mine. Change the oil and try a thicker 5w40 grade, helps quiten down the noise, nothing to worry about, what's the service history like (oil changes) being the important one? There was a recal on some of these cars for the chain, best phoning BMW they will let you know, mine wasn't included.

Mine (58 118d) has sound the same since I bought it with 50,000 miles on, it now has 146,000+ on it and still sounds the same....their rattly by nature these aluminium N47's.

Cheers for the replies! I will go for a thicker oil on my next oil change.

The service history is good to be fair, oil changed every 12-15K but i have read somewhere on here that is beneficial to change it around the 8-9K mark to help prevent the chain from wearing out quicker?

So that 'Ticking' noise is pretty bog standard for an N47 engine? Due to some of the other posts i did start to doubt my own conclusions as to the 'metallic ticking noise' generally indicates timing chain problems :/

Mine ticks when it gets warm, nothing when cold for around 10miles. The chain is at thr back of the engine, and with the block being made from aluminium, the noise is amplified, all chains will make some noise, depends on sound insulation etc...

Every N47 I've heard has that "tick" noise, I use to worry but don't anymore, its only a car. Service it correctly and you shouldn't have any issues..

yup I do 8,000 miles oil and filter services, driving to Italy in 2 weeks so will be going in again, oil is cheap!! Chains/Turbos aernt so. My car does around 30,000miles a year so it gets serviced very well using any oil that's LL04 spec and 5w40 not particularly branded, whatever is cheapest done me well for coming up 150,000 miles :)

Sold it on 169k - purchased another N47 engined motor, but in a 2012 3 series, sitting on around 80,000 at moment, and yup has the same ticking noise my "vintage" 2008 1 series had 👍

Normal noise, had 2 N47’s now both the same.

The ticking is the direct injection iirc.
