Student temporary car insurance whilst at Univerity?

Post by sootyvrs » Tue May 29, 2018 1:13 pm

My son (age 18) has had his car for coming up a year now which the Insurance policy is due for renewal in September..

He will be going away to University away in September so will be leaving his car at home and only using it occasionally when he returns..

I've not got quotes as yet but I assume it will be over £1k for a full year (hopefully will have 1 years no claim discount) but wondered if there are any cheap solutions as he will only be using the car the odd weekend and during the term holidays?

I suspect I could insure the car under my name (20+ years no claim discount) as only driver and get some temporary cover for him when he uses it but what options have others used for their kids?

Why not just insure him for when he returns or out of term time?

Sell his car as soon as he leaves - problem sorted

Seriously though, I would take advice before insuring it yourself as if the insurance company thinks you are "fronting" and he has a smash whether on the insurance or not they will deny the claim.

If he's only using it occasionally the expected annual mileage will be really low.

I'd speak to an insurer and get the annual mileage brought right down - maybe to as little a 1000 miles or less if that is unlikely and that will help bring the price down.

Also, it might be worth keeping him insured anyway rather than named driver etc, as that will keep his NCB ticking away, which will be important when he's in his early 20's and has a decent level to reduce things further. Maybe also look at the car he has and trade it for something really low on the insurance - while it might not be a 'cool' car, if it's for only occasional use while he's at Uni it doesn't really matter.

When I was at university, my mum got insured on my car for the year, but with Aviva it gave 30 days of free insurance for a named driver, so I only used the car when I really needed, although I did drop out after 6 months, so didn't really use it, but might be worth looking into, I can't remember what it was called though!

No plans to do any fronting as I was going to insure just me as the only driver and perhaps get some separate temporary cover for when he drives the car on his return.. I assume this will work out considerably cheaper than paying for a full year to do probably less than 1000 miles..

PS the car was a new car purchase (early 18th birthday gift) so probably in negative equity in relation to selling it

You should get a temporary insurance quote for him now and see how much it would cost, you might be surprised at how expensive it is for someone of his age. Doing it a few times a year may well work out similar, or even more expensive, than his own policy for a year except he won't be getting an NCB!

Ha ha yes I agree.. I started with a 10 year old car where I remember I couldn't wash under the wheel arches as it would have just crumbled away with rust!

Did the same for my daughter so was only fair to do the same for my son.. Both spoilt
