Re: Engine knock from cold start

Sounds like a one directional (free-wheel) pulley on the alternator. You will have a lot of trouble convincing anyone that that is the problem as it's very hard to define. The mechanical want to replace the tensioner pulley, however, the trouble IMHO lies in the alt pulley Here is a photo of the Alt...

Re: Vibration noise help!!!!

Could be something trivial, such as, a biro or plastic object touching the dash fan. Run the ventilation fan at different speeds and check if a different vibration noise.

Ps.. In other query above you are checking the plastic cam cover, in engine bay.

Re: My baby bmw - 116d

Thanks for the rundown on the auto-boot mod. What upholstery /trim tool do you use for Parrot installation and other work? Prying off those panel scares me and I'm three times your age! I maintain that you should work in a "wreckers" for a year, before you are confident to remove some of that uphols...

Re: Rear brake disk issue.

Perhaps, the disk pads press further back into the carrier, to allow disk pads to fit over the disc. Can't imagine them not being suitable. 10 mm is a lot of extra thickness for disks. I presume they are hollow ventilated disks, Someone on this forum will know the answer! Appreciate your frustration...

Re: Two diff oil changes in one day

Thanks for posting.
I wonder why more members haven't mentioned this "trouble sucking out, it was like tar".
Guess I'll have it done next service. I'm getting up to 70k!
Somebody got the specs for 2010 120i E87 diff. I'm pretty sure it 2 litres not sure of what oil (standard).

Re: Anyone experienced this? Heater core????

That smoke from your bonnet may be burnt oil where oil is dripping from your engine onto the exhaust manifold. Oil mist can look like steam!

Check water temp regularly and don't overfill coolant header tank... just the correct level.

Re: E87 tyre rubbing

Yes, I must admit I was completely incorrect about the ET of a 3 series wheel. My loss in translation was the term "wheel arch" and "wheel fender/guard". The Wheel Arch I see as the space above the tyre on a correctly mounted wheel tyre. The Wheel Fender/ Guard, I think of the part that is where you...

Re: E87 tyre rubbing

Back to the 1st hole for a minute.. Marco, thanks for clueing me up regarding Et and spacers.. I do see that any spacers would make the 3 series wheels worse on a 1 series. I having a problem visualising how a 225 x40 x18 wheel/tyre combo would rub on the arch , wouldn't it rub on the part of the in...

Re: E87 tyre rubbing

I would have thought that, spacers could be purchased to allow a greater ET for the 3 series wheels to fit the E87 ?
I know the 225 tyres x18 fit the 1ers without hitting the inside of the arch and do not exceed external alignment.

Re: OIL Smell In Cabin ~ E87 120i

After approx a week, smell completely gone. No trace of oil at rear of motor. I don't know if replacing internal seals was necessary, it came as part of the kit, so I guess, it was an easy job to replace them whilst vac pump was off!

Re: OIL Smell In Cabin ~ E87 120i

Well, Picked up car at 4:30 pm. The above job was done and the mechanic said the hardest part was getting the rocker box gasket back on. He did need an extra hand holding the wire harness out of the way whilst fitting. He replaced the gasket and the O-ring as well as the o-rings in the pump body. Go...

OIL Smell In Cabin ~ E87 120i

I've had the source of oil smell solved some weeks ago. The 2010 E87 after much deliberation, goes in next Friday Sept 9th. (I understand it's a common problem around 60k) I believe it's the o-ring that is leaking from the join between the head and the Vacuum Pump. There is a chance it will be the c...

Re: What Did You Do To Your 1 Series Today?

Mjh7290, those 269's look sooo..... Good!
They might be a little prone to "gutter rash". What the hell!
The ten (double) spokes must distribute the rim shock load.
How much did they set you back? Did you need spacers? what ET on rims?
