Hi Guys,

totally new to the forum so wanted to say Hello !!

So.. first couple of questions....... the wife has just got herself a 2008 123d M sport in black with Idrive etc, looks lovely, done about 85000 i think.

So with the stereo, there is a single slot, with no display, just numbers 1 to 6 (or 1 to 8 ) can't remember without checking, the car came with a satnav disc which i assume i put in that single slot ???? then though if she wants to listen to a cd do i put that in there also?? only there is no multi changer etc, or is there a multi changer in the dash ( in the stereo itself) ??? sorry If I'm being a total plonker !!??lol

any help will be appreciated !!

Kind regards

dan

Hi Guys.

So, car is back from full service, 260.00 later, also while it was in there they have noticed
that the Timing chain is chattering, and have advised me to get it replaced.

They have quoted me 1000.00. I'm soooo angry that BMW can allow this. what a crappy designed engine .
we purchased a BMW because we thought it stood for reliability and quality.

i have spoke to the garage we purchased from 7 days ago and they have offered a full refund, they won't part pay the repair bill.
but as i say will offer a full refund, ( probably sell it through the auctions to some other poor soul) so i don't know what to do.
I paid 5900 for it. for a car thats pushing 10 years old what you you guys do....... get my money back, cut my losses for 260 (for service) and run.
or bite the bullet and get it done. ??help!!

This seems very odd by the garage not to get this fixed, did they not offer any warranty on the car?

I would say cut your losses and run, personally I wouldn't fork out another 1k when you could just find a car without the problem (unless it's a really special example of the car)

Bite the bullet about the service and the deisel, but just try to find the same model, can re-use the grills, badges and touch up paint!

OH Crist !!! the wife has come home as said grrrrr just get it repaired !!!!

now I'm really confused and don't know what to do !!!!! the garage that serviced it and said about the chain chattering said that after looking fully at the car that is the only thing that needs doing !!

She loves it, what shall i do????? persuade me either way please.

also on a separate note, i think I'm going mad, so... the stereo, (regardless if i keep it or not, i just need to know) it has a business sat nav cd with the car, there is a single slot in the dash, (which will obviously play cd's, i have fully checked the car for a multi play and there isn't one, so if i put the sat nav disc in (the dash) does that mean can't play any cd's??? (as the single slot will have the sat nav disc in !!!??

its doing my head in.

please please help (mostly though if i keep or return)
Oh and also is there anything else major on 123d's that i need to be aware off ???
regards dan

With the exception of the timing chain, that engine is an absolute peach. Reliable and economical, with oodles of power. If the rest of the car is sound and the Missus really likes it, then a one-off spend of £1,000 isn't too bad. The parts have been improved through years of in-production refinement, and a replacement timing chain assembly will last the lifetime of the car. If you take the refund and go shopping for any other £6k used car, you might easily have similar problems anyway.

The other factor is how long Mrs D is going to keep the car? If she likes to change every few years, then investing in long-term durability is less attractive. Although if you keep the paperwork, it will add value for a resale (because nearly everyone knows about the chocolate timing chain, including the dealer who sold it to you).

And finally, how important is MPG? Because Toed64 is right - a 125i or 130i is the same body with a more entertaining engine. If the wife doesn't care what's under the bonnet and doesn't drive all over the country, then the petrol engine is more fun and very reliable.

I would be very fed up to have bought a car with a major fault. The garage has offered to reimburse the purchase price, rather than fix it...that's odd! I'd return it, but then I prefer petrol cars.

If you really want a 123d and you are likely to keep it for a few years, you've found one that you like and you can get the chain fixed for £1000, then you should be well set. Fix it, it'll be a selling point when you come to flog it.

Once it's done, give it a good Italian tune, every week and get the oil and filter changed every year or 8000 miles.

I suspect they knew the timing chain was on it's way out, and were hoping it would last beyond the applicability of warranty/consumer rights. To be fair, it might last another 5 years with light use and good servicing. Paying for a £1,000 repair would wipe out their profit margin and more, so like the OP says they will just resell it.

Personally I wouldn't feel confidence in a repair arranged by the trader anyway. Their primary concern would be cost, so it would be a corner-cutting minimal job by a cheap back-street workshop. You wouldn't know which parts had been changed, or whether they fitted used or pattern parts. If OP decides to keep, it needs to be done by a respectable specialist indy.

One option here would be to negotiate a cash contribution from the dealer. If they have to refund and resell, that will cost them time and money. If this were me, I might say that I'll accept £500 cash towards the cost of the repair or else I want full refund. If they knew you were serious, they would probably be happy to pay something to close this problem down.

FirBim.

Thanks for writing, and yes I'm thinking exactly what you say, and i put this to them yesterday, I'm pretty sure they purchased it from an auction, and then sell on for a small print, and like you say rather than pay for an expensive repair, just buy it back from me and either reset on their forecourt or slap it in another auction for someone else to cry over, (which to be fair is awful, ) the next person that buys it may blissfully drive it without any car knowledge and end up with a bill for 1000's or worse. and i think thats what they are hoping for.

I did say to them yesterday morning that i really liked the car and didn't want to really return it, so he said that he would speak to his boss to see if they would put any money towards the repair bill. hopefully realising that there will be cost to them taking it back and reselling. after all I'm used to break downs, before this we has a RRS. loved it but always afraid of it breaking down. so we decided to get a beemer again (we had previous to the RRS had a 330d Msport, never missed a beat, so didn't think twice about get another BMW. anyway I'm rambling on .......

Thanks again for taking the time.

THIS ^ (but be prepared to follow it through and go for the refund if they decline, ie have all paperwork and manuals, keys etc with you)

Hi Guys.

So an update ........ Had a good conversation with the chap that sold me the car and rather than take it back for a full refund offered to put 400.00 towards the cost of the chain repair. so i went with it. the main reason for it really was that we only have about 6k to spend and she really wanted a 1 series, and with that budget I'm gonna struggle i think to firstly find another one we really liked and for it to have had the full timing chain kit done with be like a needle in a haystack. anyway I've bit the bullet and gone with it. should get it back wednesday all done :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D thanks again for all your input

Hi guys

GOT HER BACK !!!! just collected it and it now runs so quiet, (so the chain was really noisy !!!) so should be all good now.

Still one burning question though, this is stereo related.

So a single slot in the dash, the car has IDrive. subs or speakers under the front seats, The single slot has 1-6 number buttons.

my issue is this, if the satnav disc is in then you can't play a cd, because obviously the nav disc is in there, someone did say that maybe once the nav disc is loaded then it might be ok to remove and play a cd, however if you are using the sat nav and you remove the disc it kills the satnav and just says re-insert the sat nav disc.

i have checked absolutely everywhere in the car for a cd changer and there 100% isn't one!!!!

so did BMW really make some of these cars that couldn't play a cd whilst the sat nav disc was in??? really!!!!!!!!!

any help would be gratefully received
