59 plate bmw 1 series ES, prone to engine chain failure?

Post by Dixxy1995 » Fri Jan 12, 2018 8:13 pm

I’ve had my BMW for 2 weeks, it has 110,000 miles on it, I’ve recently come across the common problem with the engine chain snapping on them at around the same mileage as mine. From what I’ve seen online the 59 plate is considered safer than the earlier versions. I really like the car and being 22 and having just left uni it’s quite a good car for myself that I was glad to have until this point. My engine sounds really good, it’s got full BMW service history, I’ve played videos of bad chain noise and it’s not the same same as how mine sounds, if I listen very very carefully I can ever so slightly hear a tiny bit of what I think is chain noise. If you were in my position having only just bought the car what would you do if is prone to this fault? Chance it and see how it goes on or sell it immediately?

I'd certainly start by changing the oil immediately with some decent LL04.

If you decide to keep it, change it every 8k miles from now on.

Worst that can happen is you may need to change tensioners etc, ££££ big bucks?...not really in the grand scheme of running a car.

End of the day your saving money by not having to change cambelt like you would have to on a belt car...

Put some money aside if you can, and just drive it,
and enjoy it 👍 But take advice from above and change oil every 8k, to give engine the best chance of being OK - I'm sure something else will happen before the chain poops itself, not trying to be negative, but cars do need fixing from time to time.

I worried with my first N47 after reading forums when bought the car - I worried for 4 years and 160k miles, what a waste of time worrying... I did "over-service" it mind, which probably helped.
Current - 2012 318d N47 Touring - 80,000 miles
Past - 2008 118d N47 - last seen 180,000 miles

Yeah I guess mate, thinking about it there’s going to be thousands not affected that you don’t hear from, besides knowing my luck I’d sell it for something else and the chain would snap on that.
I took a very quick video jumping out from work earlier outside of the car would you mind taking a listen? The noise can’t be heard from inside the car.
