INPA Shutdown procedure

I've had INPA connected to the car a few times lately. One time after I disconnected it, the car wouldn't start. It cranked only, but no start. Felt like an immobiliser problem. Brown trousers! Turned ignition off, removed cable from car, locked/alarmed the car, waited a few minutes, then reopened and it started ok. Normal trousers again! So my question is, what is the correct shutdown procedure for INPA? At all times the laptop is plugged into the mains, and the battery charger is connected to the terminals in the engine bay.

What I'm doing:

With INPA connected and working, ignition on, engine OFF:
Shut down INPA on laptop (press end a few times until it closes)
Press start/stop button to turn ignition off
Remove key
Remove cable from car, then laptop
End - is that correct?

With INPA connected and working, ignition on, engine ON:
Shut down INPA on laptop (press end a few times until it closes)
Press start/stop button to turn engine off
Remove key
Remove cable from car, then laptop
End - is that correct?

Can I have INPA connected and running with engine off, and then start the engine? For example I'm reading errors codes, and then want to look at smooth running. Do I need to shut down INPA, start car, restart INPA? Or can I just start the car with INPA already connected?
