Vibration after Engine change on 2008 123d

Post by Crab Fiddler » Sat Jan 20, 2018 10:00 am

Hi Everyone,

I’ve just had to change engines in my 2008 123d after the dreaded Cam Chain decided to have a day off, after 140k of working.

I managed to get a replacement engine and also had fitted a new clutch and Dual Mass Flywheel.

I took it for a test drive and when accelerating in 2nd and 3rd gear (20-30mph) there is a high frequency vibration that feels like the prop shaft. After 40mph the the vibration goes and is replaced by low frequency hum. After 45mph that seems to go and the car runs relatively smooth.

Any of you BMW boffs out there have an idea of what the vibration is caused by?

Cheers,

Bad luck on the chain snap, they all go sooner or later. :(

If your vibration is road speed related (rather than rev's related) we can pretty much rule out the engine. So that leaves us with everything from the gearbox back, giubo, prop, diff, driveshafts, brakes, and wheel/tyre balance. I'd start with the giubo-doughnut.

I had a new engine in my 135i after just 40k so you've done better than me! Haha

When I got the car back I was having vibrations coming through the steering wheel at slow speeds and this also happened when I turned left and give it some throttle. I took it back to BMW and they found a heat shield that sits on front of the steering rack had been bent when they lowered the engine in.. a slight adjustment to the shield seems to have sorted mine.. although I do still get a very slight vibration when cornering at high speed so I'm going to have another look at this myself when it eventually stops raining, as it may need a further adjustment.

Thanks for the info. Most definitely food for thought.

Good luck with the continued vibration.

This can happen at times with engine replacements. First I would back out all the bolts from sub frame to engine mounts. Back them out about 5mm each. Put the car back on the ground and give the engine a bunch of good revs in neutral. Re tighten mount bolts to spec.

Go for a test drive.

If still a vibration un bolt drive shaft from gear box end a rotate drive shaft 180 degrees.

Vibration sorted guys! It was indeed the Giubo-Doughnuts. She now drives amazing with the new engine, next thing on the lists is to give her a few more herbs :D

Thanks again for all the help!

What did you do exactly to resolve it?

Swapped the old knackered giubo doughnut for a new, non-knackered one, I assume.

Was their any signs of excessive wear on the Guibo when you removed it? Did you replace the bolts for new items too?

Interested to know as mine may be knackered too.

You sometimes see surface cracks, or even full failure:
