Finally done my diff oil change

Post by Justchris17 » Thu Mar 08, 2018 7:49 pm

I done my diff oil today such a straight forward job and couldn't believe how dirty the oil was it was jet black no way this is a lifetime oil! I only got 690ml sucked out roughly. I fitted my new dimple diff plug I was planning on changing it again tomorrow when the new oil mixes with the old stuff I couldn't get out is this overkill?ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Good job! Got a few questions for you- Whats the capacity of the diff? Where's the fill plug btw and how come you also used a replacement plug, are they one use?

Hi mate I've been told the capacity is approx 1-1.2l and that is the fill plug in the pics, these don't have a drain plug because it's meant to be lifetime oil so you have to remove the refill plug and suck as much old fluid as you can hence the oil suction gun. The new blue plug I put in is a Dimple magnetic plug that I fitted instead of the standard plug I think it's a good idea to have on as there is nothing to filter the oil so a magnet to attract any swarf will be great in my eyes and lots of other people agree.

I got about 690ml that I injected into the bottle but I would guess I got closer to 700ml as there was some oil I couldn't get out the pump.

I see, I did wonder as I was having a good look around the diff and couldn't see another plug. Are you sure you managed to move the pipe around enough to get to the lowest part for the diff? Was it also sat on level ground for a while before you did the job? If capacity is 1.2 then 700ml is not great

Yup agree the plug is worth having, how much was it?

Yeah it was level ground and moved pipe as much as I could and tried bending ect but couldn't get anymore pipe wasn't getting far enough. I read somewhere someone taped some wire to the hose to keep it in a U bend to reach bottom I might try that next time

Did mine last week with the same sucky pump and got out around 900ml. As long as it's full now with the correct oil it should be fine though.

Ok I done it again just now and got 1 litre out well pleased haha! I taped a coat hanger to the hose to make it rigid to keep shape to get to the bottom of the diff. The magnetic plug picked up some filings over night which are a pain the get off the plug cause they are magnetised lol. ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Cheers mike and good luck I used a coat hanger but I recommend anything that will help keep the pipe rigid. I think I might do mine every year or 2 years now
