Research N47 timing chain, DPF, EGR, etc before buying a diseasil.

BMW make good straight six engines, it's what they're known for. The vast majority of 4 pots are a bit iffy, I'd treat yourself to a nice 130i instead.

This.

I had a 2010 116i and I had the coil packs / injectors go TWICE and everything else on this list also go wrong. Luckily I had warranty but they aren’t the greatest and have extremely poor fuel economy.

I used to get 200-210 miles out of a full tank in the 116i. My M2 seems to be a bit more fuel efficient
I cant say I've had the same problems as you or such low mpg.

Not one coil pack?! Wow, you must lead a charmed life!

Well, I got them all replaced as part of a recall but prior to that, no coil pack or injector issues *touch wood*.

Only issue I've had is mine is come MOT time and testers not knowing the emissions band is different to normal but other than that, she's been solid. Time to sell up and get something different, however.

My bad, I'm mixing you up with someone else who had fuel rail pressure sensor, MAP sensor, and coil packs replaced.

You have been extremely lucky then! Two people I know with a 116i and a 118i experienced issues with the coil packs and the timing chain tensioner like me.

I loved my 116i thats why I kept it almost 8 years but they aren't very reliable.

Admittedly, the extremely low MPG is due to my commute being stop start traffic for 4 miles each way however, my first tank of fuel doing the same journey in the M2 has gotten me 260 miles - 50 miles more than the 116i.

Your M2 is also a newer engine/newer technology than the N43 found in your 116i.

What made you decide to change your 116i for an M2?

The 116i ended up being a run around and for work commutes. I actually bought a used E92 M3 a few years ago which was just riddled with problems. Handed it back to the dealership after 8 months and my partner and I bought a new A5 instead. So we had one run around car and one "nice car".

I couldn't persuade him to get rid of the Audi so I had to let the 116i go and bought the M2 for myself. I couldn't justify keeping, insuring and maintaining two cars for myself. We don't need 3 cars between the two of us

Ah fair enough!

You can always justify more cars ;).

Like others have said, get an N52 1 series if you can. A 130i with 120k on it, will still outlast and feel much better than a 116i with 20k on it.
A mate had a 116i before I got my 130i, and he had endless issues with it. In fact, he refuses to own another BMW because of that car. It must be bad because he now owns a Peugeot 3008 ffs!

Seriously though. The 116i is painfully slow, is crap on fuel, and has one of the WORST engines BMW have ever built inside it. Or you could get a 130i which is fast, good on fuel for what it is, and has one of the BEST engines BMW have ever built inside it.

Easy choice tbh.

The 125i four cylinders have issues too. Had coil packs and then injectors out of warranty - running so rough you could fill a mug with the water pouring out of the exhaust yet no fault code

Sadly for the customer no engine is bulletproof but it's well documented here that the 6 pots are the far more reliable proposition. If bmw only produced straight 6s they'd put a lot of parts suppliers out of business. I guess :?:

I have the 1.6l version of the 2005 and have also owned a 328 that has the same motor as the 130i so I can talk to both. The 6cyl NA motor is a beauty, so smooth and so linear, really great engine, probably one of the best that a normal person can buy. The 1.6l motor is like everyone says: a fuel thirsty rough little critter that will not win you any speed records.

However, I do enjoy my 116i as you can drive it at its limit and still be legal. With the sport suspension a 116i is a fun wee city car, it's cheap to insure, cheap to buy and you won't have a heart attack when someone scratches your bumper. Of course when I leave the city and hit the motorway, do I miss the extra 120hp?? Of course!!

Regarding coils I had 2 go bad on my 6cyl so getting a 130i is no guarantee to solve that issue however in either engine they are not bad to replace.

my 120i had all the injectors and coils replaced under warranty just after I bought it, but I seem to have 2 coils fail every year! nox sensor failed when out of warranty and wasn't cheap to replace. issues with fault codes relating to nox sensor and blocked cat used to show often but since moving and now doing motorway journeys to work I haven't had the error come back.
