N52B30 Camshaft bearing ledge?

Post by Dr.Velasco » Mon May 21, 2018 10:25 pm

Hey guys, want to tell my recent experience, this might help someone:

I have a 2011 30k miles 130i 6Mt, stock.

Out of the blue at a stop lights, rpms climbed to 1300 and came down. I thought I had pressed the throttle. Light turns green, I start driving and felt like I had 100hp less!!

When I restart my car issue goes away but eventually, (after 15 mins of traffic it comes back).

I go to a trusted BMW independent shop, they scan it and intake vanos code P1553 comes up. We switched solenoids, went for a drive, issue happened, scanned it again and unfortunately, same code came up, along with low oil pressure (for vanos).

We called the previous owner who had serviced the car in the same shop. He said that in Oct 2017 he changed vanos units (not solenoid), but problem persisted. He then changed oil from 5w30 to 10w40 and issue went away.

I bought it (not knowing this issue), drove it for 4.2k miles, most of it highway at high speed.

So, shops conclusion is that probably I have a camshaft bearing ledge issue on the intake side.

Oil changes in my country are recomended with 6250 miles intervals.

At the moment, I have 2,000 miles more to go, but I'm going to perform an oil change to see if this happens.

From what I've read is that intake side ledges can't be replaced as exhaust side, so I will need to buy a new head!

What will be the worst possible scenario if I continue driving with this problem? Considering oil changes (with quality oil), every 3k miles, with trackdays once in a whie?

Thanks
2011 130i 6MT

2011 car has the revised head and chances of bearing ledge issues are slim.

Check the 2 check valves that are in the side of the head are not blocked and replace them.

That's the one! Done mine. They were clean and it made no difference.

Thanks guys!

Yesterday I changed my oil with Motul 5w-40, car runs fine, at the moment.

No rpms climbing at stop lights.

I will look into vanos check valve replacements!

0l0dom0l0, so what you are saying is that pre lci n52s were more prone to bearing ledge? If my car's previous owner neglected in oil changes, is there a chance this issue will still be present?

Vanos units were changed a year ago, solenoids are fine, apparently, putting a thicker joir (but not too thick) helps the problem!

I really wanted to keep this car for a long time so this band-aid solution type is not ideal!
