Drivers side dash panel removal / MCU location

Post by niterida » Thu Jun 14, 2018 7:20 am

Hi - I am trying to get to my MCU in my 2007 120d E87 Australian model, which I believe is under the drivers side lower dash panel. I have removed the lowest panel ans can see what I hope is the MCU but cannot get the next panel off. Its the one directly under the steering wheel. I have searched all over the internet with no luck.
Does anyone have a guide to removing this ?

Also can anyone confirm that is the location of the MCU ?

I have bought a CAS reader and am trying to program my new keys.

Thanks

I don't know if that's where MCU is but I can tell you its easy to remove the panels you mention, just a few screws and it pulls out, get your head in footwell and it all makes sense.

I have removed all the screws but it certainly doesn't just pull out.
It comes up around the headlight switch and air vent and I can't get either of them off either.

I thought you meant the cover just above pedals which is easy to remove, if its the lower dash section that comes up around switches etc that is more involved but dont think it was too difficult although i seem to remember centre console has to come out first, i recently removed my complete centre console and dashboard and found a guide on here to get me started i will see if i can find it...

Just to add do you need to take dash apart to program keys, ? i thought it could be done over the OBD port etc ?

Bugger - I thought the centre console may have to come out - I have done that twice before and it is not fun :(
I did come across that dashboard removal thread but it didn't seem to be what I wanted as it doesn't go into detail enough.

Oh well looks like a 2 day job for sometime in the future

Thanks.

Its not a big job to get the centre console and that panel off really, maybe an hours or so work at most :)

Im still not sure why you need to do it all though ?

To program a new key you need to attach a key reader to the MCU directly over the main chip and to do this you obviously need to open the MCU which means you need to pull it out :(

And no you can't do it through the OBDII port........

Although I have just found out it only has 1 bolt and I may be able to get to it without taking the panel off :)
