My baby bmw - 116d

Post by liamm10 » Thu Jan 12, 2017 10:45 am

I’ve posted a few times on here before but just to introduce myself I’m Liam and I’m 19 from Wisbech. (Sounds like a speed date)

So I’ve had my 116d e81 for a month today and 1200 miles ish on, so far so good.

A few pictures to show her off.

I thought I would start a thread with my progress as I make the car feel like mine. Most of the mods I’ll be making will be cosmetic as my insurance is sky high as its my first year driving.

My first job is to wrap the interior trim as its bit scratched in places and my OCD is kicking in. Im thinking brushed aluminium or steel, close to oem as I like the look of it at the moment, maybe just abit darker.

Im also going to get some new wheels as my 207s are majorly scuffed and I fancy something abit different from the other 1ers in my area. Right now I fancy a set of the f20s 379’s which are pretty cheap and I think they will look pretty nice and different.

Whilst the wheels are off I’m going to paint the callipers black as there is some rust behind there that will be more visible with the 379’s on.

After this my plans are:

Auto boot mod
Gloss black grill
Carbon/Black wing mirrors
Professional head unit upgrade
Close to OEM window tint
Exhaust tip - is it tacky to fit a dual tip on 116??
(Maybe) Cruise control retrofit
Parrot kit install

Hoping for her to look something like this by the summer.

Let me know what you think, I also like advice and maybe suggestions on some more mods. Im not looking to spend thousands but anything to make the car abit different- although really - all these mods are just standard for this forum  .

Right!! Back to work

Have you thought of Bluetooth retrofit instead of the parrot ?

Then you won't have unwanted extras on your dash !

Would cost more and from my understanding I wouldn't have anything on the dash, just fit the parrot with the connects2 and the unit can be controlled from my steering wheel. I don't have the usb module so think it would be more of a pain in the arse to retrofit.

Hello and welcome

That's a very cool car for 1st year of driving...mine was a Hillman Avenger estate. It would be cool today though - it was nowhere near standard within a few months, I seemed to get through engines until I a faster one.

Parrot kit works flawlessly at a fraction of the cost of OE retro fit...when I did it anyway.

You'll have seen it posted up here, but change all your oils and do the engine oil and filter every 8 to 10k.

Thanks Toed! - Your Hillman in 2017 is probably worth more than my 116d

With the Parrot kit, where did you place the Mic? I've heard good things and it seems easy enough to install.

Its had a service by the garage when I brought it, but I'm thinking about changing the oil just to be confident its running on good quality stuff.

My friend rolled and somersaulted that Hillman down a ditch into a stream... 7 occupants, no one badly hurt - extraordinary. I was sad - I thought that the driver should have had a scratch or two!

The mic is on the roof console next to the interior light.

Blimey, surprised u weren't all killed as Avengers felt like they were made out of tinfoil. I learned to drive in one.

I was surprised too. The roof folded in almost flat with the seats on one side. But with only about 120bhp it went really well and the estate had a full 5 link rear end, so it handled quite well (with the wheels on the ground anyway!).

I took my test in an Allegro. The Avenger was infinitely nicer!

The parrot kit is perfect. You can fit it all tidily behind the air-con panel if you're methodical and patient. The worst part for me was prying out the panels - the retainer clips need a shocking amount of force to dislodge them the first time, I was terrified something would break.

The connects2 adapter works fine, the steering wheel buttons and stereo mute etc all work. The microphone is the only visible flaw, as you'll need to clip or glue it somewhere. Mine is clipped to the roof liner above the right-hand edge of the rear-view mirror. But with the wiring tucked away, it's a tiny little black thing and un-noticeable.

I had the rear windows tinted to factory spec and also brought some genuine 18" BMW alloys with non run flats :)

Thanks Garnz, I've probably not worded it the best way.

Its just an install of some spring which pops the boot open when you press the boot button.

See here:

I think this would be convenient and would look pretty cool too.
