The white plastic bearing clips out from the top. Just takes a bit of doing but that's how, not from underneath. Takes about twenty minutes from start to finish and don't forget to grease it up.
If you look at the new one you can see the splines that hold it in position. Just push these in and rotate it and it should lift out.
MY SIGNATURE STOPPED WORKING AFTER AN UPDATE.

Hello,

I just tried to do this, and bought a brand new plastic bearing. However, I could not get the bearing to slide down the gearstick shaft, no matter how I tried. So are you absolutely sure the bearing just lifts out and over?

My gears were a bit grabby and sticky between 1- and 2 so I thought I'd give this a go.
I bought a new bearing from Cotswold BMW.
Followed this guide to get the gear knob off and the gaiter too. That was all easy peesy, even the gearknob came loose without too much struggle.

this is what I was faced with

the ball was a bit grubby and definitely dry, so I went through the gears and cleaned it up with PTFE lubricating spray.

However, as you can see, there is absolutely no way the new bearing fits over. It is just too small??

I did find lots of pieces of debris which were slowly working their way out, such as this

Removed several of these.

Ideally I'd have removed the bearing but a) I was struggling to get it to unclip, and b) well, as you see above the new bearing would not go over anyway..

I did follow the tip about rotating it slightly, and then greased it quite liberally with copper grease.

Well took it round the block and much improved. I am annoyed I could not seem to replace the bearing. The housing is just too small to go over. Wring part? does the shaft come off? anyone know??

hmm,

Cannot quite work this out. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e87- ... on/OzFzM6I

does that mean if the bearing is lifted the bering is removed from underneath?
Perhaps Octavius or someone can clarify..
