Thanks Jiggaman & Peter.
Is the M3 replacing the 3 series for work commute then?

Double WOW Rob!

Well done on both counts :)

I think the M3 looks better than the M4 anyway, due to the short rear overhang :)

So what else made it close to the cut?

Thanks Rob, knew you would approve .

The M3 has proper grown on me. It's shorter and squatter and the rear arches are actually a bit wider and I have done a complete 180* in that I now think the M3 is better looking.

Nothing really came close if I'm being perfectly honest. RS5 was probably closest but no real comparison. Was almost sold on the M6 until I drove its more nimble smaller sibling. The RS5 sounds great but lacks drama. The C63 has a bit more drama but now they've lost the 6 litre engine it loses some character. The M3 has both character and drama by the bucket load.

I was dead set against another BMW since my last 3 daily drives have been Beemers but I quickly found out that the competition isn't up to much and there's no point switching brands just for switchings sake. Would've felt like I was cutting my nose off to spite my face to swap.

So so pleased for you both with the little one on the way, and to top it off having found the perfect car you were looking for. We gave you lots of grief but you stuck to your guns and waited. And waited. And waited more. And then waited a little more. And then yep waited!!!!
But you found it and so chuffed for you mate. You deserve it.

Love ya mate.

Cheers buddy. There was a lot of weighing up the pros and cons I'll admit that. Was actually starting to do my head in when I couldn't find the right car for 3 months. Much love back at ya mate Image

Took the Porsche into the Yorkshire Dales yesterday. First time I've drove it since I've had the M3. I was a bit worried I'd fall out of love with it but it made me grin from ear to ear. Its so so different to the M3. The handling is insane and the noise is completely different.

The Porsche yesterday felt more like a proper sports car than it ever has before. The manual gearbox was an absolute pleasure. Point and squirt handling and traction. Absolutely love the M3 but the Porsche makes it feel like a fast saloon, whereas the Porsche feels like a true sports car.

Today I've taken the M3 out so I can do a direct comparison. The two cars are night and day different. Absolutely love the relentless acceleration in the M3, it really makes overtaking even 4 or 5 cars in a row a breeze. The shove from the turbos is addictive. The pops on overrun are more noticeable in the M3, although I love the sound of both cars (cats and silencers modified in the 911). The M3 noise seems to be all about the exhaust (which is great) whereas the Porsche is all about that engine.

Handling wise there's no comparison. The Porsche would be the better car to drive in the national parks or Scottish highlands without a doubt. I'm loving the modernness of the M3, loads of creature comforts, less road noise and not as hard ride.

This weekend has settled some nerves for me as I thought I might fall out of love with the 911. Glad to say they are both here to stay.

Shame, I was hoping a well cared for 997 is coming on the market soon! :D

That's exactly how I felt when you took me out at the Carsington meet. The 911 just feels proper, like it was made to swallow up twists and turns, whereas the M4 is lovely, but felt like it's going to snap out of line at any moment doing 20 mph less than the Porsche. Don't even get me started on the noise! I generally dislike aftermarket exhausts and artificially pumped up volume (once I hear them l life) so listening to the 997 was like an orchestra right behind me. Loved every minute of it! Made me even more of a "Porsche guy" than I was before...

Haha. Let me know if and when you are thinking of buying one. It might be around the same time that I look to upgrade it. There's a few cars that I've been watching over the past few months and I could probably be persuaded to buy something else if the 911 is a straightforward sale

Hehe, looking at 981 caymans and boxsters at the same time too... also, I'm in love with the rear of the 997.2, but they're soooooooo expensive!

I've created a for sale ad on M3 cutters just to gauge interest as much as anything. If the right offer comes along then I will consider selling.

I'm not 100% sure I actually want to sell but the car seems a bit wasted on me. I'm driving a lot of miles (more than anticipated recently) and I feel it's probably the wrong car to do this with. I still love the car but part of me thinks I should get a 640d Grand Coupe that eats motorways for breakfast. I think the issue is that I still love the 911 and drive that on weekends, which means the M3 only get driven on my commute which is a bit wasteful of a £45k car.

Having said all that, the missus doesn't think I should sell so I may keep it for another year or so. It won't cost me anything in that time as it's got 1.5 years warranty and 3.5 years free servicing remaining.
