Near miss- satnav half left!!!

Post by Goon » Mon Jul 03, 2017 6:34 pm

Used my satnav for the first real time yesterday with voice instruction and nearly had a crash because of it. Approaching a roundabout at a motorway junction it tells me "stay in left hand lane and turn half left" so I stayed in the left hand lane and awaited another instruction ( 3 lanes at roundabout) the lights change and off I go with a car on my right, it then tells me to go further round the roundabout to the 3rd exit. By now the car on my right is turning left down the motorway sliproad and so I have to go too. A huge detour ensues to get back on route. Annoying!! So what the hell is "half left"?

Sounds like one of those fairly major roundabouts with lanes that have a tendency to merge?

I've never heard the instruction of 'half left' so can't properly answer your query.

However, I suppose the lesson here (no criticism of your driving ability) is not to be too reliant on Satnav, as it can put you in situations like this.

Anticipation and awareness are the key to any driving situation, not blind reliance on Satnav.

No offence intended ..... just airing my thoughts.

Will be watching this thread, as I'd also like to know what 'half left' might mean, should I ever hear it.

Both mine say half left/right, it just means a very slight angle but normally onto a new road.

But as Paul says just use the nav as a guide and overrule it as needed, they aren't perfect in my experience.

Yes it was a pain, if it hadn't been so busy and I was on my Own I would have shot across but there were 4 others following me in the same lane so I had no choice. Will have to practice with it sending myself on routes I already know to get used to the instruction ethos. My portable garmin device automatically zooms right in on any direction change so you can see which lane is required.

I probably have had that instruction, but have never heard it, as I tend to glance at the satnav from time to time and not listen to the instructions.

Too busy enjoying whatever music takes my fancy and with my Harmon Kardon dishing out better instructions!

Glad to hear you avoided an incident though

The voiceover is so annoying on the BMW nav. She's never been turned on in my car!

I have the satnav voice loaded into the number 2 button on the dash in both cars so I can turn her on/off quickly. It can get annoying, but sometimes in busy cities you need the voice on to stop having to look at the screen.

I get the half left/right instruction frequently in cities. It appears to mean "tend to the left/right" rather than turn.

I also get the half left and half right instructions quite often, it happened on my Harman Becker in my Merc and drove me mad so was hoping it was unique to that system; never heard it on any other sat nav, until now. It says it on the road into my work which is just curved, yet it still says to turn half left and I've noticed it saying it on T junctions too.

The voice instructions are a real weakness of the BMW satnav. As well as ambiguities, mine regularly says to take a roundabout exit just as I'm passing it - far too late to act.

What I've noticed is that the junction diagram is usually correct. So I tend to use that and not the voice at junctions. It's as if the algorithm for voicing the junction is flawed, not the actual map.
