Holes in the trim under rear speakers into Boot area

Hi all,

New owner of a 140i here, with HK systems fitted.

Under the rear speakers (on the trim beside the parcel shelf) there are holes cut through the trim in to the boot area.

Any idea why? Seems to me that this will let more road noise into the boot area, and from there to the rest of the car. Potentially it is a ventilation thing to reduce heat?

Any ideas? Anyone patched the holes in pursuit of improved sound quality (or reduced road noise)?

I'll try this myself, but thought I'd ask to see if anyone has been there and done that.

No, but did loads of other sound proofing things which meant that removing the entire cargo shelf did not make the car any noisier - so therefore assume that the holes, or blocking the holes would have no effect.
