Checked out Maks FB page, he's obviously clued up on all things cic and retrofitting! Wonder how much he charges? I was hoping to attempt by own install. I'll reach out to him.

Thanks wibbles

All looks pretty straight forward to me. Do you have a MULF or TCU in the boot for the fibre optic ring?

Hi Wibbles,

This is all new to me, no MUlF or TCU, car came with a basic setup.

So have to run all the cables, optics etc into the boot. Also means learning how to code the car and get it all working together :?

May have to do a dry run on a test bench check it all works before attempting to install it.

It won't work on a bench unless you have a CAS & JBE test bench.

One of the biggest hassles of upgrading from the basic radio systems to idrive (which a lot of people forget about) is the actual mounting of the CIC unit itself.

It can be bodged (but it will still be a bodge) but the proper way to do it is to replace the complete dashboard. The idrive version (all types) have different mountings for the main CIC/CCC units.

As said before, the CIC/business system (and the CCC systems before that) is just not worth the hassle and expense of retrofitting.

CIC/pro-nav (preferably with DAB) or CIC/NBT is the way to go.

That's true redwizard of oz, I realise ill have to cut and chop into the central dash to fit the unit.

Its worth it for me as its still a good system upgrade and from what I've seen it can be done.

I can always add DAB afterwards but im doing this on a budget and trying to find time to do it is hard enough with work and family commitments.

I'll be well chuffed when it in anyway

Im based in NW too, just outside the M25.

If you need a side-kick, not that I know as much as these guys, then hit me up. I'm also in the process of figuring out how to upgrade to SatNav...

This is ideal in my mind, but doesn't fit my car due to heated seats function. - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005WGTAS0

You can add DAB as a separate unit to any system, but you can't beat an integrated unit.

It's all down to budget in the end - better not browse on here too often then.

Also with regards to the combox, what does this particular combox allow me to do? What features can it give me?

I know you usually place this in the boot, but it seems the wiring loom i have is short, can i place this in the dash, under the seat?

I also have an issue with the most fibre optic cables, i'm told i cant make my own as they need to be specially cut and fitted to the connectors? how would one go about doing this?

In answer to the questions above - the black connector on the combox is for the snap in baseplate under the armrest.

The fibre optics are required for the combox to work - new cables can be bought at your dealer.

The combox will give a full speed USB, BT streaming, BMW Apps (with the right CIC firmware or FSC code).
