My E81M the car that BMW never built.

Post by F11xed » Mon Jul 17, 2017 11:33 pm

Hi, My name is James and I run a small independent BMW specialist in Stockport. I have briefly been on here previously when I realised who the previous owner of the running gear I bought for my project belonged to... I have built plenty of track focused BMWs but never documented them (in all fairness I have done a shocking job of documenting this). However I will subject you to a few mismatched pictures from my shonky phone camera!
I spotted this on eBay and thought It looked cool and should be a doddle to finish! Image
Turned out that it had been dressed up very well for the advert "minimal work required to finish" was a slight understatement to say the least, I'm sure you have all heard the story but basically, the garage that were working on this car had from what I can understand deprived its previous owner of owning the car to line their very own pockets with my money. - enough of that. Back to the project.
Unfortunately when I looked into it the wiring job was the work of a blindfolded child
Image
I did however get it running with this loom but it had more short circuits than Johnny 5
So I started looking for a new loom as it would be much easier to modify an original than organise this carnage.
Image
I Bought this for my mum to use for a few weeks when she decided to write off her other car! She's done 200k and looks to of had a hard life (the car, not my mum you cheeky buggers!) I then bought her this:
Image
So I could steal the 200k 118d and break it to return me some parts and the money I paid for it. - this plan lasted 5 minutes I then realised that swapping interior is such a pain so I would be better swapping the running gear. So this happened
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
So I swapped all the running gear out of one car into the 118d over the course of the weekend, it took about 16 hours but mainly during the evening and overnight because I had plenty of customers cars to crack on with! At this point it's just in the hole, everything bolted up and fuel plumbed in. It's a bit of a PITA to swap diesel to petrol but at least it's £35 a year road tax from here on inImage.
Image
Bought a genuine 1m bumper
Image
And some wings! Don't look at the red immobiliser wiring hanging out the door shut! ImageAt this point I had fired it up and ironed out a few issues with the starter motor and throttle, I had a serious lack of power after 10 seconds of turning the engine on, turns out it was all because my radiator fan wasn't plugged in! It was actually my good friend Mike at Darren woods who mentioned that - just goes to show no matter how much you know, you never know everything!
Image
I bought some E92 m3 wheels just because I love them!
Image
Then we had to make them fit! Along with a full respray!
ImageImage
Image
Image
And finally where I'm at now, just in need of a rear bumper which is being modded as we speak Image
I will do my best to update you as I progress and I hope your eyes aren't bleeding from reading all this garbage!

I think you've done an excellent job of turning that into something unique.

My only query is that, unless I've missed something, you don't say what it now is ..... a 118i perhaps?

Decent job as far as I can see though - well done :)

Cheers pal, in all honesty the conversion was the easiest I have ever done, such a breath of fresh air having everything bolt up! The only PITA was getting the rear quarters to match the 1m skirts but luckily my Bodyshop guy is the nuts!
Here is a photo of the engine apologies for the mess I havnt tidied it up yet!

It's on 235/35r18 on the rear, if I want to run wider I would probably have to put front wheels on the rear as they have a slightly higher offset and are slightly thinner width. The rear arches absolutely swallow standard wheels now. Yeah he is a bit of a wizard, he spent a lot of time getting the lines right without cramming the quarters full of filler! He did a mk5 golf prior to this which turned out really well so I knew I was in safe hands!

Whereabouts in Stockport are you?

I'm a Darren Wood customer but it's always good to have a back-up for when they're crazy busy.

Nice work btw; I think an e81 was always the better shell for this project.
