Milkie's 130i

Post by Milkie » Thu Jun 01, 2017 11:23 am

Decisions
I’ve been thinking about what car to buy for a good few years, but nothing really took my fancy, if it did it was unpractical or way out of my price range. My only requirement was I wanted to get my Mountain Bike inside, I had looked at the 330i Touring, E46 M3, S4 Avant, S3, Escort Mk2 Estate, C55 AMG, etc.. I’ve been abusing rentals for about 6 months and realised the price I’m paying each month is more than if I had bought a car, so time to get a move on and make a decision. I ruled out Audi's as I didn't like the interior and felt pretty numb to drive, the only one I did like was the RS4, which is damn expensive to run. The C55 AMG was at the top of my budget and again was expensive when things went wrong and wasn't a C63 AMG. The Mk2 Escort Estate is still on the cards in a few years time, finding one that has had the body recently done is hard, most are rust buckets that require a hell of a lot of work. The M3 I couldn't fit my bike inside and again running costs seem quite high. This left the 330i Touring & 130i, I have rented a few 3 series touring and while they are nice mile munchers, they didn't come alive on B roads, this left the 130i. There were other cars I did not even consider, Focus ST1/2/3/4/5/6 whatever they are on, Golf's, Mazda 3 MPS, etc.

I asked on STW (MTB Forum) if anyone had an early e87 and if they could fit a 29er full suspension mountain bike inside. A few showed some pictures with their bikes in the back. I went and had a look at a few 130i’s, all of them were absolute dogs. I was tempted by one in Newcastle, but the logistics of getting there made it a nightmare for me and the interior was the wrong colour, it also sold quickly.

So I wrote down a list of what I want from a car:
Reasonably Fast
Get the mountain bike inside, 2 at a push?
Black leather interior
Cruise Control and AC
Not going to break down, or worry about having to do a 2000 mile round trip at short notice.
Hydraulic Steering, never really got on with ePAS
5 Door is preferable
^ Not a big list, then I started looking on this site and added the following
Xenons
iDrive & BT Phone
Auto Lights & Dimming Mirror
Folding Mirrors
Comfort Access
Tinted rear windows
Le Mans Blue
Then I looked on this site at Members 130i’s and had a few mods that I would want to do straight away
Remove RFT’s
Fix the rear suspension, new shocks, springs, etc
Camber pin mod
M3 LCA’s

The list just keeps growing!

Hunting
I was supposed to go see one in London, but that sold the day before I was able to get there. This one popped up a couple of hours south, so I was able to pop on the train and take a look and drove back in my “new to me” 130i. It came with most of the mods I wanted to do, some fitted and some not. I took a look and bought it, I think the previous 2-3 owners were members here.

The drive back to Brizzle was pretty uneventful, I did have a convoy of 2 other BMW’s following me for most of the motorway journey. Is this a common thing with BMW’s? I did notice one problem on the drive home. When on the motorway putting load on the front right there was a harmonic hum, sounded like wheel bearing.
I knew when buying, it would need some work, it’s an 11 year old car, if you think you’re not going to be spending money on it, you are a fool!

Here's a couple of photos from the previous owner, I haven't taken any shots yet.

Here's the spec:
Xenon Headlamps
Black Leather Interior
Heated seats.
Front & Rear PDC
Comfort access / keyless go
Professional SatNav with iDrive
HiFi speakers
Voice control
Folding Mirrors w/ dip on reverse
Door puddle lights,
Auto lights/Auto Wipers/Mirror
Cruise control

E90 M3 Front Anti Roll Bar
Bilstein B8 Rear Shocks
Whiteline Rear Subframe Bushes
12mm Spacers all round

Brakes & Humming
After a couple of journeys I noticed the brakes were not right, felt like warped discs or pad build up on the disc as the judder was in time with the wheels rotating. The rears were recently replaced but the fronts looked a little worse for wear. I replaced the front discs n pads, I also checked the front hub, no play, rotating just fine, no noise either. I had my mechanic check it out and he said it sounds like wheel bearing but there is no play, only one way to find out! He replaced it and the noise has gone.

Music & BT
I love my choons! I used to DJ locally and a few times in Bristol, but that is many years ago, but music is still a big part of my life. I had heard you can use a DVD full of MP3’s in the CD drive, I know what you are thinking, but you don’t know until you try! I think I must’ve got the wrong end of the stick because it didn’t work. I tried a CD full of MP3’s and it worked! That was fine for a couple of weeks, until I got bored of the limited selection of tunes. I wanted to retain the BT phone in the car, as it works really well.
I only have the 3.5mm aux and cigarette lighter, no USB, therefore I decided on the Kinivo BTC455 Bluetooth receiver. I think I am right in saying it is now illegal to even touch your phone while driving, this receiver has its own controls for skipping tracks and you can even use Siri!! It is BT v.4 so it connects to the i-Drive Phone BT and the Kinivo at the same time, sending music through the Kinivo and calls through the i-Drive. I mounted it just in front of the handbrake, I can rest my hand on the handbrake and easily use the controls.

The sound quality is good, there is no interference and I can charge my iPhone in the same socket that the BT receiver uses.

VANOS & Oil
It was taking me a while to get used to the car as I have only been using it at weekends. After a month I finally wasn’t kangarooing going into 2nd at low revs! I did start to notice there was a delay on the throttle, I hooked up Carly and it showed some fault codes. A few hours of googling & reading I decided to replace the VANOS solenoids. The delay has now gone and seems to go a bit better too. It did also show that the rear demister is not working, so I replaced the relay with one from eBay, but the fault is still there.
Oil change time! The oil was pretty flat, almost looked satin, the filter looked like it had just started collapsing too! It looked as though it hadn’t had an oil change in a long time. What a difference, the engine feels so much better, smoother and sounds better too!? Luckily I had already read on here about a few people querying the amount of oil used when refilling. I managed to only get 5.5L in and it said it was full. Luckily I had put another Litre in the boot, the following day I checked and it said add another Litre, so I did, it is now 2 bars from the top. I'll now always keep a Litre in the boot as I saw the price the garages charge for it.

Lights
Occasionally the car beeps at me telling me the front right parking light isn’t working.. Oh it is working! It came with 3W LED bulbs for the halo rings, they looked quite old, I replaced these with MTEC 5W LED bulbs. I managed to do this without removing the air box or anything else except the headlight rear covers. You can now see the lit halo rings in daylight, although I don’t actually drive around with them on, I leave them on Auto. I am impressed with the MTEC bulbs, they look to be twice as bright as the 3W ones.

Looks
As with cars that you buy, you don’t see many of the same until you buy one! I have never seen a Le Mans Blue 1 series, then I see two in my home town on the same day.. Yup, there are two other 5 door LMB 1 series in my home town, one driver gave me “the evils” when we drove past each other. I decided I needed to change mine a little bit.

Black gloss grille and smoked side indicators were bought and fitted! I bought the grill from eBay, it wasn’t the best quality, a bit of fettling and removed skin and I had them fitted. I didn’t lose any skin fitting the side indicators. They aren’t as bright as I hoped, but they will do and I do prefer the look. According to my friends, it doesn’t matter as BMW drivers don’t use them! I’m liking the look of the car now, although I’m not sure if I should change the rear badge to black, to match the black windows..
The exhaust tips were quite dull as they had oxidised, so I grabbed the Autosol and gave them a little buff, not the best job, but definitely better.

Protecting the Interior
The weather has been nice, so I have been going places to ride, chucking my bike in the car, it only just fits! I had a tarpaulin, but I was still getting dirt everywhere.

Image

I bought some genuine rubber mats to save the carpet, I can see why they are expensive, but are definitely worth it. I had looked at hatchbag.co.uk as they do a custom fit liner for the 1 series. It took me a couple of weeks to decide due to the price, again it was worth it.
Here’s a photo of the Hatchbag in use.

Image
Image

There are a couple of spots that are not covered with the seats down. It’s the bolster where the rear seat belts are. I’ve created a template and ordered some PVC fabric. The Hatchbag already has some Velcro bits, so my extra bits should attach easily, once I get someone to sew on the Velcro.

Cup Holders
Cup holders! I only have one, which is great for me, not so much for any passenger! I went through this forum and bought the Sakura cup holder, which I was going to mount to the side of the centre console/gearbox tunnel.. I have to say, it is completely rubbish, yes you can fit a can in it but.. Here is a picture of a coffee cup holder with a standard sized coffee cup, think McDonald's coffee cup size

Image

As you can see it does not work.. I had a spare 10 minutes and was able to redesign the top ring to an 80mm diameter, which should fit a standard coffee cup or Starbucks/Costa. I'll hopefully get it printed in the next couple of weeks.

MOT & Fuel Smell
Put it in for an MOT, it failed on the rear tyres, so I replaced them with Michelin PS4’s and it flew through with no advisories! It still has some issues that were not picked up, I plan on getting these done within the next couple of months. The main issue now is the smell of petrol outside the car when you fill up above 2/3. A bit of reading it sounds like the breather pipe, which I think means I’ll have to drop the rear subframe to get to. I’m not exactly ecstatic that this needs doing, but hopefully I’ll get to investigate this weekend and decide on the course of action, DIY or the Independent that hasn’t returned any emails but I do hear is pretty good.

I have owned it for 2 months now and I have done the following:
New Front Discs & Pads
New Front RH Hub
New VANOS Solenoids
New Rear Tyres (Michelin PS4’s)
New Cabin Filter
Oil Change & Filter
Replaced SatNav Volume Knob
Replaced Rear Demister Relay (still not working)
Replaced 3W LED Halo Bulbs with M-TEC 5W LED
Updated SatNav Maps to 2017 (speedcams do not show)
Black Gloss Grille & Smoked Side Indicators
Hatchbag fitted

Things to do:
Discover where the fuel smell is coming from & fix
Tiny crack in front windscreen to be fixed
Change gearbox oil
CDV Delete
Noticed there is a lot of wear on the Front RH tyre on the inside, need to investigate why
Drive it through the Welsh mountains, a lot!

Overall I'm happy with the car and the more things I'm getting done, the more I'm liking the car. Oh yes the sound is quite addictive, the MPG not so much! We didn't buy these things for MPG though

That bike
Serious bike envy! (Nice car too)
I've just bought a 130i, and couldn't imagine putting my bike inside it! I use the seasuckers on the roof, they work really well!

Yup, I still smile everytime I ride it! Still keeping with the mountain biking rules, bike costs more than the car.
I'll be getting a Thule rack soon, I wouldn't trust suckers, especially with some spirited driving!

Sakura Coffee Cup Holder

Post by Milkie » Wed Jun 07, 2017 11:44 am

Managed to fit the Sakura drink holder that only holds a can which is pretty pointless for coffee lovers. I re-designed & printed the top ring so it can hold a coffee cup, I also had to file away some of the plastic for the bottom cup so it sits level. Here is version 2 fitted and working!

Image

Folded up it is out of the way of the seat and is actually quite stealth looking.
Image

It's not in the way of the passengers legs or the lever for the seat.

Here's a link to the file if anyone else wants to print one.

Think I need to do the vanos too, 78k on the clock and sometimes a bit hesitant (now I can do second gear, like you say).

Moved my images from PhotoBucket to Imgur, which seems to work like PB did!

Fitted Thule Wingbars and a couple of fork mounted carriers. Went to FOD at the weekend and I did not notice anymore noise than usual. I was quite surprised as I haven't fitted the rubber strip in the middle yet!

Thats my old car! Nice to see it again.I owned it from 2013 - 2016.
Glad you got the hum sorted, it drove me nuts. Only happened on left handers and didn't get any worse in 3 years - that's why I didn't suspect the wheel bearing.

Btw did you ever get the rear screen element fixed? When I had the car I commuted in it and the battery would sometimes need a charge. The car switches off the rear screen element if the voltage is below a certain level.
