130i automatic diff onto a 125i

Post by Adamski_m » Sat Jan 06, 2018 9:54 am

Hello guys I thought I would make a separate thread asking if anyone knows if the automatic diff from a 130i would be a straight swap into a 125i? I’m looking at modding my car so it’s more track focused, planning on lsd, seats, lightweight wheels and some more suspension goodies.

I've not seen the manual and auto diff's side-by-side, maybe ask someone like Birds (or Quaife themselves)?

Good idea Marco. I noticed there was a thread online that looked to be about the swap but sadly it was in German and I think the guy was asking about what diff oil to use rather than the swap details

From a quick look on RealOEM it looks as if the 125i uses a direct bolted mount from the propshaft to the diff input flange (4 bolt) whereas the 130i has a rubber guibo coupling from the prop to the diff which is a 3 bolt.
I’m guessing you want to change final drive ratios? as the 125i manual is 3.23 and the 130i auto is 3.64.

Only thing you could do to use 130i diff (auto or manual) is get a rear section of 130i propshaft and fit it to your front section and get the prop balanced.
Installing the whole 130i prop might be compatible but might not seeing as the gearbox output flange could be a different length as 125i and 130i use different gearboxes.

Anyone have ever realised this swap???

"Only thing you could do to use 130i diff (auto or manual) is get a rear section of 130i propshaft and fit it to your front section and get the prop balanced. "

are you sure that it is possible? Do the spline shaft between 125 & 130 are the same?

more details on my project : i have installed 135i front brakes on my 125i and now i want to install the 135i whole rear subframe

It seems that my 3,23 diff doesn't match with 135i 1/2 shaft (lengths are a little differents)

so i need to find a diff (~3,46 ratio) that match with 135i rear subrame and my 125i propeller shaft.

All suggestions are welcome

All non M rear subframe are the same on the E8x and E9x platform.
So your 125i rear subframe is identical to a 135i one...or one from a 120d, 118i, 130i etc...
So no need to change it.
All diffs will physically fit to the subframe too as the 3 bolt mount positions are the same fitment across 188, 210, 168 diffs.

Thank you for your answer.

I know that the rear subframe is The same for all E8x & E9x

By the way, my first need is to install the rear 135i brakes.

--> Wheel carrier; flange hub ; 1/2 drive shaft are specifics to 135i, 123D, 130i ; and you have to change it in order to install 135i rear brakes

That is why i want to install the WHOLE 135i rear subframe

I am OK with you that the fixing points of the diff are the same. so physically i can fix it....But I measured the diff width (between the output flanges) and my 3,23 diff (small case 188 type) is shorter than the big case 215 type.

So i cannot install my 3,23 diff (188 type) on the WHOLE Equipped 135i rear subframe, it won't match with the 135i 1/2 shafts.

That is why I want to know how / If I can equipped my car with a big case diff (215 type) with a "custom" propeller shaft.

"Only thing you could do to use 130i diff (auto or manual) is get a rear section of 130i propshaft and fit it to your front section and get the prop balanced. "

I hope you will better understand my problem, Sorry for my poor English explanations (I am French) and feel free to correct me if i made some errors.

Thank you for your help!
