Funny thing is powerspeed make bespoke systems for piper when they have toomuch work on. Thats how i got to know about them called piper about 10 years ago when they were in ashford and just down the road from powerspeed.

I thought this sounded a bit funny so i phoned my contact at Piper who I deal with for oil purchases , a director .

They were not ammused .... Power speed have never produced any products on behalf of Piper .
An ex employee occaisionaly gave people Powerspeeds name as an alternative when jobs came up that were not viable for Piper to undertake .
This is probably where things have become confused .

thanks for replies guys - piper are now based in folkestwoe right?? maybe a bit far for me... in any case who out of the two would you recommend and any other tips regarding custom exhausts?

I heard the mandrel bending is the best way of making them - increases flow etc. It will be cat back as I don't want to mess too much with warranty. Any other tips?? Will def be posting up thread of final mod :D

Piper have been in business an very long time .
I had a Piper 4:1 exhaust on my Kawasaki Z650 way back in the late 70's , so they should know what they're doing by now I reckon ..

I did say bespoke systems and meant to imply stuff that Piper can't be bothered with. If they were happy to recommend work to a local outfit from such a prostigous company then that can't be bad!

Besides these guys have been in business quite a while making custom exhausts as well. And the quality of the welding for the money is 2nd to none, a friend of mine used to know Hayward and Scotts nephew and had an exhaust custom made by them many years ago on one of the UK's fastest mk3 RS turbo's and even he reckoned the welding and quality was extremely good for the cost. I'm not working for them I've just had quite a few systems made by them and I've had many friends who have had systems made by them on recommendation and none have been unhappy and all have shown considerable gains on rolling road.

My system cost me £300 inc vat but silencers or fancy tips took half a day to make, made from SS steel and all mandrel bent, they try to make all from one piece of tube to minimize welding and air flow interuption, i was there when they made mine for the BMW. Sounds good and has given good torque increases without even having a custom map done yet to benefit from this extra flow. Gained 10lbft torque at peak and increased in general across the rev range, but figures for both bhp and torque should be higher as the engine was clogged up with EGR crap and also turbo was on the way out.

Trouble with Piper is they are only going to want to know if there is going to be a pretty large production run so they can sell to the mass market, unfortunately the days of when they used to offer custom jobs for cams or exhausts are long gone and now all you get is a no were not interested. But there are others that are willing to do custom one off's and for a reasonable price. Cat Cams do an excellent custom cam service where you ship a head to they and they'll make a complete cam to suit and this service would come in at a very respectable price, same for other firms that make exhausts, obviously you won't get the same honed development as something thats mass produced but anyone who has experience in this field will be able to make and design something that will be an improvement, mainly the design comes into the headers on N/A or Turbo manifolds systems are less critical although rolling road sessions on various different size bore systems is benefitial but unless you have the money to have 2-3 different size systems made up it's going to get pricey!!

I would map after even with a crippled intake from egr gunking it badly i still showed 10lbft torque increase on my previous healthy rolling road from 300 to 310lbft i bet that would be more with map, id also recommend getting egr bypass intake too then get cumstom map from will, and fit a new stock filter minus the foam bit round it and making some intake ram scoops and airbox mods. Dont get aftermarket filter they let more dirt in and the oil messes up the maf sensor over time. I hwve gone through 3 mafs in 110k miles each time needed changing soon after i fitted my performance filter, u can phyeically see fine dirt collected on the maf after few thousand miles on stock one u dont even with the foam sock taken off.

I agree with you on that front Piper won't want to know about a 1er, if it were Scoob or an Evo then they could market it. When I first got my 1er and had a bit of cash lying about spojke to them but they said the demand wouldn't be there...

Trouble with Piper is they've gone from being a race specialist to a boy racer specialist. Not their fault i guess as thats where the money is with the youngsters that just are all show and no go. But would be nice if companies like this could still cater or even put themselves out a little for the more hardcore enthusiast. Other companies can manage it so why can't Piper? Hell even Newman Cams made me a custom camshaft without giving me crap about volume sales etc. And best of all cost me only £150 for 12 lobes to be reground to their recommended specs. Cat cams would even design you a whole camshaft from ground up if you send them a complete head with valve train and you end up with a machined steel billet cam to a spec they think the head can handle. Cost of that roughly a very reasonable £600 per cam!!

Haidergill did you get an exhaust done in the end? Powerspeed have done quite a few 120d's now so they're pretty used to them now!! Just watch out anyone coming back from there after a new exhaust don't try it out on the M20 too many unmarked cops around as I got caught out again the other day!! lol!! Oh well another 3 points back on my liscense! lol!

Unfortunately not, when things got pear shaped in the City it put the kibosh on my plans. Fortunately the gravy train is now back on the rails and gathering pace. In one way it's given me time to get used to the car and see what I like and don't. Even without the non rft 205/50 R17 I found the ride a little too harsh. I think it's a bit laggy too though since i've been filling up with V Power than BP Ultimate it's more progressive rather than turbo off turbo on BOOOM, Bluefin helps too with spinning up the turbo sooner. Would like more feedback through the steering wheel. Found out the wife is expecting so priorities may be shifting and I have one eye on the F20. First things first I think some lighter weight alloys to help soften the ride and help the suspension deal with pot-holes better.
