Well today i received the second instalment of my brake kit and they look bloody awesome! The Discs, Backing plates and sensors arrived and they have given me an idea of how humongous this set-up will be! :D

I have a slight problem with the backing plates as one looks completely different from the other! When i ordered the parts on Genuine Auto Parts it said 34116792237 (Left backing plate) is no longer available and it had been replaced with 34-11-6-872-081 which now it’s arrived doesn't have such an aggressive air scoop in comparison to the right side (34116792238).

Does anybody know if this is correct, I don't want to install odd backing plates if I'm honest? Why would they discontinue only the left plate??

Enjoy the brake porn below ;)

What are the weight of the z'man discs?

From photos they look like one piece so all steel whereas stock and MP are 2 piece with alloy hubs.

The M performance discs weight 11.9kg, the ZimmerMann are slightly heavier 13.2kg. If there was a more significant difference in weight I would have gone for the M Performance.

My F30 backing plates looked like your left side one does!

That's a huge bulge on the right hand side one! Wonder if they have changed the design?

That's interesting because the left one is actually the part which registered as no longer valid hence the different part number was supplied. I wonder if I've ordered the wrong versions to start with!

Does anybody know the part numbers of the backing plates supplied in the M performance kit?

Correct according to realoem.

Mine were 37 and 38 and have airscoop humps both LHS and RHS.

Perhaps consider fitting m2/3/4 backing plates - even bigger humps apparently.

Confused with these backing plates part numbers!

The older design plates with the large air scoops (34116792237 & 34116792238) have been superseded by parts 34116872081 & 34116872082... But BMW direct parts suggest 34116872082 is no longer available?!

http://www.bmwdirectparts.com/oe-bmw/34116872081 <--- Available

http://www.bmwdirectparts.com/oe-bmw/34116872082 <---- Discontinued

Thought the part ending "081" might be a universal part for both left and right but the part I have is stamped "L" which i assume is for left. So it seems you can't get a matching set of the old or the new parts!

Does anybody know what the deal is with the backing plates? Are these no longer supplied in the M Performance brake kit??

I cant help with the new backing plates you bought but I can tell you on my 130i when fitting the 340mm discs and calipers I didn't need to change the stock backing plates they were big enough to cover back of the larger discs, I do have some M135i backing plates though which might be ok for your setup if you want them, just cover postage.

Thanks for the kind offer Ian!

If it comes to it and I can't source a matching plate in the next week, I'll just install the different types of backing plates I already have.. I suppose you wouldn't see them anyway once they have the huge discs in front of em!

The backplates main job is to prevent stones and general road crud getting onto and into back of discs, so they are not essential to cover the complete disc just as long as he backplate covers most of rear disc area it will do its job even if its a few mm short of total disc diameter, on my old track cars I often removed them to improve airflow over brakes and never had an issue but brakes were regular stripped and cleaned etc being track cars.

I not sure if the 125i has smaller backplates due to its smaller 300mm front discs compared to 330mm on the 130i, but if they are anything like 130 they will be fine without changing them if you cant get ones you want, maybe get a wheel off and have a measure of what is on there.

Managed to source another left backing plate with the large air scoop (34116792237) from a German Tuner! :D

Seems I may be the last person to ever fit these as are they are as rare as hens teeth now! Braided hoses should be here early next week and the brakes will be fitted on Thursday 16th! :D

Cant wait to get these installed now! :spotman:

Well guys I'm part way through the install and I've just noticed the alloys won't fit back on! I'll need to find somewhere to buy alloy wheel spacers!

Does anybody know if 12mm and 15mm will clear these brakes with the 18" M sport wheels??

Oops!....is the caliper fouling the back of the spokes so doesn't go onto hub fully ? or is it catching the inside of the wheel rim ?

Which wheels do you have as well ?

I can just get my 208m 18" wheels over my front 340mm setup but spokes are very close at around 1mm gap!....I run a 3mm slip on spacer to give some extra clearance, on my other wheels I need 12mm spacer to clear due to different spoke design/shape.
