2014 Ring trip ?

Post by nickfrog » Thu Jan 02, 2014 12:33 am

I will be going either early May (Thu 1st and Fri 2nd, TF days) or late May (Thu 29th and Fri 30th if they are TF days) in the 125i. Possibly both, depending on schedule.

I usually drive with a friend in a 997 on the Wednesday and spend 2 nights there before leaving on the Friday night to stay with friends in Cologne and drive back on the Saturday.

Does anyone want to join or already has similar plans ? It would be good to meet up.

Dates are now set:

Wednesday 30 April - Channel tunnel 9.50 am train with a view to get to Nurburg for the evening as the track opens from 5.15 to 7.30 that day. Maybe a couple of sighting / warm up laps...

Thursday 1 May - TF day (tourist day from 8.00am to 7.00pm). My mate is hiring a Swift but it's his first time so sharing with him to show him the ropes, well the few that I know anyway...

Friday 2 May - TF day (tourist day on track from 8.00am to 7.30pm). We'll share a Swift again. We will return to the UK that evening on the 9.50pm train.

Me in the 125i and either 2 or 3 Boxster / Boxster S (one coming all the way from Wales)

Going the Prum way as we're meeting a Boxster coming from Luxembourg there.

Good to hear that brynllwynog2 will be following us in the next train and I don't think he'll struggle to catch up with us in his M-Lite...

We are staying here http://www.nuerburgr...e/index.php/en/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Pistenklause booked for the Thursday night.

I'll be there for an evening session this Friday! Got a track day at Spa on Thursday.

Tempted to go again late summer, quite pricey compared to other track days, so even though it's an awesome circuit, not quite worth it for a trip for me.

Yeah couple of people mentioned crashes before the 4 day job last year. But some told me it was the opposite, less traffic as people have 4 days of it. The later proved right, really quiet if you picked your time, maybe I was lucky.

not the friday (goodfriday) known as Karfreitag, its the busiest day of the year, you can't drive anywhere, its like a southend cruise. brunches is a sea of people and all round the track is packed.

last year it was mostly shut at easter for snow

Slightly off topic but where can I get the dates when the track is open to the public ? I'm hoping to go in June or July and need to get planning the trip.

I'm planning to go the weekend of the 5/6th July but getting conflicting info on whether the track is open all day on the 6th (Sun). Official website says 8am to 7pm but most other sites say it's either closed or only open for a few hours in the evening...all very confusing.

I've emailed the track for clarification as well as our hotel - Am Tiergarten

Well. This was a great trip. Me and 2 Boxsters in the end.

We managed to get on the Chunnel at 9.20 and were at the hotel at 4.00pm which was perfect despite a couple of comfort/petrol stops. Getting 37mpg out of a 260hp / 1400kg 4-seater is brilliant too !

The Wednesday TF evening was very quiet and felt perfectly safe. The BMW surprised me a lot actually, probably thanks to the Supersports which are absurdly grippy. Now on my third visit I am starting to understand the track a little more and I make less mistakes too…

This place is simply addictive. It still feels very very special and the novelty simply hasn’t worn in yet.

Second day in the Swift was brilliant as it was my friend Mike’s first driving laps and after a wisely slow sighting lap, he was totally in his element. Quite a lot of traffic actually, more than last year. Quite a few track closures but we managed 14 laps between us, which was OK. My last two laps were a bit wet and even more exciting if I am honest. Not sure I would have driven a UK reg car though.

Friday was unfortunately foggy and wet so the track didn’t open until very late by which time we had decided to leave as we wouldn’t have had time to put the laps in. We were lucky that Dale at Rent4Ring gave us a full refund.

So what’s next ? I can’t wait to go back and would like more laps in my car on a quiet day/evening. Possibly October time this year and I’d like to take my mountain bike too to dedicate a day to riding around the track for unique view points.

Will the new owners retain the TF format ? That’s the big question.
