Also, I know that the centre console on the LCI cars is slightly different, to accommodate for addition buttons like turning the parking sensors gong off and the start/stop too, are these HUs from newer cars a perfect fit and completely plug & play with pre-LCI models or will I need to alter some of the centre console to accommodate the unit, or fit a new connector into the wiring for the back of the unit?

As for coding, there is a seller on ebay selling a few Pro HUs with BT & USB built-in who offers to code the unit to the car's factory specs if you send them the VIN before they post it. Is that possible to do with just the VIN, not having it plugged into the car in question?
The newer HUs are backwards compatible with both LCI and pre-LCI cars both physically and electrically.

Yes, the seller can pull up your vehicle spec from your VIN and code the HU accordingly. This should work fine assuming that no-one's changed anything relevant since your car left the factory (e.g. retrofitted PDC). You can pull up the factory spec using https://www.etkbmw.com/bmw/EN/vin/decoder/online and check it matches the car.
Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately the seller I ended up getting the newer HU from was not one that offered to code the unit. However the BT and PCD gongs seem to work right out of the box. The only thing that isn't working is the USB which I have had routed through to the dash storage bin to try and clear some of the cables/clutter from under the arm rest. The HU shows USB as an option but whenever I connect my iPod it doesn't show as plugged in, it doesn't charge the iPod either (though I don't know whether that would actually happen anyway). I spoke to the eBay seller and they told me that it would need coding to the car. I've taken it to an independent BMW specialist who claim to use the same software/interface as BMW but the readout is that the HU is 'incompatible' with the vehicle. They say that if I took it to a BMW dealership and they discovered it was not a genuine OEM part (alarm bells ringing at this point) then they would refuse to do ANY work on the car in future.

I believe you can code the PDC gongs to tell you which side of the car an obstacle is on with the newer HUs, this hasn't happened with mine so maybe coding can give me this added feature too, provided that I can find someone to sort it out.

Any thoughts on where I can go from here?

I was under the impression that if USB shows on the HU then it's active. There is a special Y-cable for iPod, have you got that?
Are you sure the PDC beeps aren't already stereo? On mine the stereo effect is v subtle.

The cable that came with the HU was an aftermarket one (in fact I think it had an Audi logo on, but that might have been the mic for the BT) it was just a cable with a USB plug on the end, no specific iPod fitment.

That worries me as I thought along the same lines, that if the HU showed something as an option, provided all the cabling was in place (which is is) then it should work.

The cable that came with the HU was like the one in this listing with the green and yellow ends:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aux-In-Switch ... SwurZZEXCx

But the port was not twinned with the AUX socket but a separate plug.

You will probably find it works OK with a USB stick with MP3s on it. For the iPod you need a y-cable that connects to both the USB and aux sockets.

Oh man, give got to be kidding me! So getting the USB port fitted in the dash storage bin was a terrible idea!!! Surely the Y cable is only passive though, right? Even if the 3.5mm jack isn't plugged in the HU should still recognise an iPod, but no sound should play as it isn't plugged into that AUX socket?

I'll try a standard MP3 later on today and see what happens.

Thanks for your help guys.

 Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I actually bought one of these Pro HUs myself and fitted it last night, it works fine with mp3s on a USB stick.
Was thinking about where to put the USB port. Do you have a pic of it fitted in the dash box, that could work well for me?

im wondering if buying this aliexpress HU with bluetooth will give me bluetooth phone functionality? i have the multifunction steering wheel, but no BT option in my current professional head unit and i have no usb connector. Its a 2006 e87. Anybody knows if it will work right out of the box or what more i need?

Yep it will work. I have been running one for a few weeks.
The aliexpress units usually come with a non-official mic & usb cable but they worked fine for me.

Yes, it's an Audi/VW part so it doesn't clip in properly but you can use hot glue etc to hold it in place.

I didn't make a neat job of it to be honest, just a hole drilled in the centre of the bottom of the dash storage bin. if I undid the work and put back the rubber liner you'd never know it had been there. I figured if it worked I'd make a neat hole in the left hand side of the storage bin as, when I had the dash out, I noticed there's a route the cable can take to get there without being obstructed.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I ended up putting it in the glovebox (pics in the Professional HU thread)

This is the one i ordered: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-DH ... 11387.html

Do you know which mic i need to order? would this work from the same seller?
