F20 Rear Camera Retrofit

Post by Raygbmw1 » Sat Dec 27, 2014 6:07 am

I just retrofitted rear reverse camera on my F20 116i. It took about three months
to source the parts in Ebay and FCPEuro.com. The parts are :
1. Control Module - 66 53 9 302 256 from ebay.co.uk (Euro $250.00)
2. Camera - 66 53 9 240 351 from ebay.co.uk (Euro $50.00)
3. Connecting line reversing camera - 61 12 9 282 360 from FCPEuro (Euro $54.00)
4. Retrofit Cable – from ebay.de (Euro$60.00) – Better to buy the F10 Rear Camera rettofit 66 212 181 317.

Item 3 – Camera cable from FCPEuro website.

Total Euro$414.00 plus Euro$80.00 total for postage and delivery to Australia.
If I waited patiently in ebay I could have gotten them a lot cheaper. So those that can wait you may be getting the parts way less than what I got them for.

The biggest challenge for me is how to I install the camera. I have to cut through the rear plastic bumper. This gave me cold sweat just before I started. I checked ista/d on how to remove the camera and it appears that the camera is just a tight fit in the hole just above the number plate.
I measured the part that will go into the hole and made a sketch on a sticker. My plan is to stick the sticker with the hole clearly drawn and cut the hole without going over the edge marking. I first drilled inside and used flat files to trim the hole. The camera is snug tight with in the hole. I had to push the camera hard to fit it in.

The next was to route the cable to the camera. On the left-hand side behind the rear lights there is a hole with a rubber stopper. I took off the rubber and feed out the camera cable. Refer to the next couple of photos.

Once this is done, installation of the retrofit cable is the same as the F10 installation or the F30 installation to the back of the NBT unit. You can get info in this from http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showth ... p?t=873744" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The only different is the KBus lines the green and orange/green wires to connect to the A173*8B of the FEM. I managed to install them to the FEM at the left hand front passenger foot well.
Pin 1 to ground (-)
Pin 2 to pin 21 of my HUNBT (composite +)
Pin 3 to pin 24 of my HUNBT (composite -)
Pin 4 to pin 23 of my HUNBT
Pin 5 to Pin 52 of FEM (KcanH) unit. Connector A173 * 8b
Pin 6 to Pin 51 of FEM (KCanL) unit. Connector A173 * 8b
Pin 7 to Pin 6 of the rear holder. (+). Connector Z2 * 6b

Pin 54 with arrow, 53 no arrow, 52 with arrow and 51 with arrow from right to left.

Once installed I added 3AG to VO and reboot the NBT by pressing the volume knob for 20 seconds and once rebooted I got the rear camera working.

Brilliant little write up there. I don't think I could bring myself to cut the bumper but if your confident enough then fair play to you. If you could get some photos up of it all working and some shots of the outside that would be great.

Casey,
It was really cold sweat on a 28Deg Day when I started cutting the bumper. Filing the hole to size was not too bad as it is made of soft PVC plastic. It took me a bout 2 hours as I was careful with the filing. I figured that if I botch this job at least the hole is not very visible.

One that came up is that on the day I installed and checked the SVT file in Esys there was no TRSVC ecu. However after an overnight I checked again and there it was the TRSVC ecu without the Cafd file.
I manage to insert the CAFD file using shawn's advice by doingas he said in bimmerfest forum.

Connect => Read FA (VO) => Activate FA (VO) => Read SVT (VCM) => Left-Click on HU_CIC => Click on "Detect CAF for SWE" => Select the CAFD from the Latest I=Level => Select OK => Right-Click on HU_CIC (the ECU itself not the underlying CAFD) => Select CODE.

But instead of HU_CIC ecu it was the TRSVC ecu.

Here a photo of the screen working.

Are the parking lines dynamic, i.e. Do they move when the steering is turned?

Very impressive. I'd never try that myself but looks like you've done a stellar job. Can you post a photo of what the rear bumper looks like from the outside?

Thanks

The pin 7 is the 12v supply. I followed the Insta/d to the rear fuse box under the luggage compartment at the rear. There is a 5amp fuse already installed. I will try and get photo tomorrow.

I'm going to do this retrofit on my F20, where does the TRSVC unit sit in the car & does it require a mounting bracket?

The pins in the FEM - are they part of the retrofit harness?

Thanks

been a while since I visited the site. My next project is to install the front PDC and fog lights. I will also see if I can source a front view camera since installing the front PDC and fog light will need to remove the front bumper might as well try and install it.

Oh…. Wibbles incase you still need the answer to your question, yes the pins are included in the retrofit cables.

Great work ..

could you post the photos that are no longer available?
Where did you route the cables? Where you set the Control Unit ?
