Hmm ok I may have to use this butyl rubber sealant as it's all over the headlight joins and is a PITA to get out of the grooves. Probably will have to put in oven to seal the joins but that's no problem.

Good idea with the glue sonic I shall purchase some asap.

Make sure you get all the existing sealent out.

Fixing rings wise, as I recommended to you earlier in our PM's was using fishing line is another option but IIRC you said you can't get a hold of it?
Bit difficult to get out all the butyl rubber when it has set hard. But I shall have a look buddy.

Meh no course I can get hold of fishing wire I said I cba with that effort with fishing wire as no idea how I'd even start doing that. Way to involved and specialist.

I shall see how I get on.

aj_mckay wrote:I'd be reluctant to use super glue. Go for some two part epoxy resin, if anything. Alternatively secure the rings to the housing with fishing line - pretty much invisible when installed and won't melt like glue.

Butyl windscreen seal will be fine for re-sealing the lens to the housing.
Surely I'd have to drill holes for the fishing line to secure the rings and then tie knots etc? Nah cba with that.

I've bought some gel resin glue but may get the mixing epoxy resin.

Thanks for the guidance guys much appreciated.

Bit of heat with a heat gun or hair dryer should help?

Fishing shop? or Outdoors shop even?

Ha yeah I know where to get it from buddy what I mean is it won't end well trying to secure them as they need to stay solid on the diffuser and pretty sure I won't be able to achieve that and look nice.

Yeah I'll try the heat gun but it doesn't just peel off you have to scrape it off and even when it's warm/hot it just moves rather than comes away. Plus trying to hold the pieces in place and use heat gun and scrape all at the same time is problematic to say the least.

However, I shall see how I get on over the next week/weekend.

Quick update -

Gave the new rings a dusting of primer as they look terrible without this -

Image

Also resoldered the new rings together to the plug and used heat shrink instead of gaffer tape.

Also attempted to glue the rings in place. Didn't go too well. I'll check tomorrow as had to leave work with the rings still drying but I don't think they've stuck down enough. Epoxy resin is the way forward I think.

Glue has held and looks solid. One ring isn't 100% centre but looks ok.

I used epoxy for my rings with no issues at all. You just have to be careful and use patience.
I don't understand the use of primer on the rings 🤔 What am I missing.

Ill take pics and show you later Peter, but basically without the primer the rings look very yellow and can be easily seen from a distance and it looks very aftermarket and cheap. A little primer removes the yellow glow. A little like the fried egg look with the indicators? Sorted with silver tech lamps. Similar principle bud.

Depo V1 Headlight Bi-Xenon Mod - UPDATED Page 1

Post by Twenny » Sat Aug 19, 2017 9:51 am

Ok quick update - decided to change the 95mm ring for another 100mm because they are a completely different colour!!

Normal exposure -

Exposure turned down -
Image

Looks terrible and was one of my gripes with Toby's set.

So, here's two 100mm rings -

Normal -
Image

Exposure turned down -

Image

Looks a million times better.

If I'm being pedantic there is more light leakage from the left ring because the diffuser is silver and the right one is black. But it's much much better.

Good work mate. Mine are still in bits as I can't decide on carbon wrap or carbon skinning for the inside
Now: 2006 130i with even more goodies ;)
