Aircon not blowing cold enough air!!

Post by rexthedog » Wed Jun 14, 2017 6:24 pm

Guys,

I picked up a 125D M sport a few months back. Around 50,000 miles, 2014 model.

Living in the UK, there isn't much need for AC (lol) but last few weeks has been scorching and I am positive that the aircon in the car cannot be right.

I have it set to the lowest setting (16 Degrees Celcius) and with AC on and it is just blowing mildly luke warm air, I ave tried keeping the engine running and it does not improve. Something does not seem right, my last car, a VW golf on 16 celcius turned the car into an icebox.

What's going on?

Cheers,
Rex

Still under warranty ?

Its generally recommended to run the aircon all year round. keeps all the seals and moving parts lubed. also dries the air inside the cabin.

As said, use it, or the seals dry out and it leaks out the refrigerant gas. Might just need a re-gas, or may have a permanent leak that needs fixing. If you're unlucky, then you may have a compressor fault. Occassionally clutches on the compressor drive fail so it doesnt spin - its an electrically operated solonoid so might be worth checking fuses.

Thanks guys,

I only recently picked up the car from bigmotorworld around 3 months ago. It had a full service history but I wouldn't know how the previous driver used his aircon. Most likely not much being in the UK.

What do you advise I do? Send it into BMW to get checked out? They cost a fortune so not sure I want to do that.

BMWs come with a 3 year manufacturers warranty. How old is your car exactly ?
Did it come with any sort of warranty from BigMotoringWorld (mebbe not worth the paper) ?

On a 3 year old car it'll either be a compressor or condenser fault.

Seals don't dry out in 3 years from new if you haven't used the aircon. If you press the auto button it turns the aircon on anyway.

Take it back under warranty from bmw or the garage you bought it from.

Hi first thing you need to do is see if there is gas in the system. A dealer will charge diagnostic time and if there is no gas in the system chances are the will be a stone shaped hole in your condenser and that will not be covered under any warranty.
AC specialist can test the integrity of the pressure lines.
If you have a full loss, nitrogen testing or a fluorescent die can be added this will show the leak and in turn be fixed.

If there is gas presents and of the right quantity only then would I take it back under warranty as the only possible fault is component failure or wiring fault and these would be covered under warranty.

This will sound really silly and you've probably checked but near the hazard warning button is the air flow on red or blue?

Mine too was blowing out warm air and making a whining noise. Had BMW re-gas it and now perfect and cool, although £45 lighter.
BMW said this should be done every 2 years and not covered under warranty :x

Thanks everyone.

Yes I checked the aircon is on blue not red. Definitely something up, went into a friends X3 and on 20 degrees Celcius it was super chilly.

Going to take it to a local servicer to have a look. Not sure there is any warranty available anymore.

Yay! Nice easy one :)

Just remember to use it regularly; doesnt damage fuel economy significantly, so even over winter its worth having on at least once a week to dehumidify the car and circulate the gas/lubricant. I tend to only turn mine off when its really cold, and the heater struggles to warm the interior with the aircon on as well.
