BMW 116i E87 - Fuel Tank Breather Valve Clicking all the time 24/7 - Help appreciated!

Post by mark5211 » Tue Oct 24, 2017 11:24 pm

I keep my car in a garage at night but I've noticed a loud audible click coming from the engine, even when the car has not been used for a few days, after investigation I found that it is the 'Fuel Tank Breather Valve' which sits above the MAF sensor which is clicking loudly, It clicks around every 4-5 minutes 24/7 and its been doing this for a while, I noticed it while I was investigating an intermittent starting problem that the car has had for 6 years and could clearly hear this while I've been working in the garage.

Is this right to be constantly clicking or should it be silent when the car is not being used and could it be related to my car not starting properly?

Any help is greatly appreciated with this as I'm getting to a point where I've changed every part that could affect starting and still cant find the problem, but Id like to know if this part is faulty as it seems strange that its always clicking,

Thanks

Mine never clicks. Sounds like you have a blockage.

Try loosening the fuel filler cap (just enough to let air in, you dont want fumes leaking everywhere and building up an explosive mix in your garage). If that stops the clicks, then the breather is probably blocked. That could influence starting, by reducing fuel pressure - like having a faulty pump.

Now, why its "clicking",I cant imagine.

Many Thanks for your reply Nottsknots, it was extremely helpful, I timed the clicks and they were approx every 1min 30 secs, so I removed the fuel filler cap and the 'breather valve' then didn't click again, I waited around 20 mins and no clicks (but will try it again tomorrow and wait longer)!

What would my next step be? cleaning the breather (which I don't know what it is yet)? or is a job that a garage would have to do for me?

Thanks again for your help, I've had this starting problem for nearly 6 years and spent over £2,000 so I'm running out of options now, but any suggestion is appreciated.

Well, if the clicking stopped, try starting with the filler cap off too.

Just looking throug the docs below, it looks like the valve is electrically operated, which could explain it clicking. I was expecting just a vacuum decomresssion type click as air got pulled through an obstruction. I've learned something (about petrol engines, but mine diesel)!

If the control circuit is venting when it shouldnt, then its likely to be f-ing up the fuel pressures, so who knows what effects thet'll have. Could be the valve, or could be the controlling pixies in the wires.

Might be worth reading around the fuel system, possibly testing/replacing the valve, and if thats getting beyond your skill level, then take it to a beemer specialist (dealers will charge an arm, leg and a kidney, and non-beemer garages will just be fiddling at the edges - you really need a decent independent).

Thanks again, will check it again tomorrow but will also look into changing the valve as its probably the least expensive option, if that doesn't work ill take it into my bmw specialist (again) and see what they think, as least its something to ponder, thanks again for the advice though!

Seems to start ok with filler cap off, but the starting problem is intermittent, would leaving the cap loose for a few days to see what happens with starting problem cause any problems or is it unadvisable?

Just leave the filler slightly loose, amd dont crash. You want to break and vacuum, but try to avoid allowing fuel to slosh everywhere, and try to avoid parking in enclosed garages.

Other than the (very) remote possibility of allowing explosive vapour out, it wont cause any problems for the car/engine.

Thanks its about a quarter full so will try it with the cap loose for the next few days and see if it solves the constant clicking and starting problems!

Cheers!
