F20 116i cooling leak and heating

Post by Sunnydee » Fri Jan 19, 2018 9:34 pm

Hello all,

Have a 116i F20 Sport with looks like a cooling leak, is this a common issue?
Also heating as stopped working, eg inside of the car cabon doesn't get warm - any idea what this might be?
And.... start stop doesn't work at all

none of these issues displays any warning in the centre console.... PLEASE HELP?

How old is the car?

Coolant leaks are not all that common, but there have been a few case of the coolant expansion tank cracking on the F models, that have been replaced under warrenty. There have also been a couple of cases of something leaking at the back of the engine (cant for the life of me remember what), resulting in coolant loss.

Lack of heating may be just a symptom of having no coolant left. I drove a Vauxhall Nova from Blackpool to London in mid winter and nearly froze, only to discover the water pump had dumped all the coolant, and the only thing that stopped the engine overheating was that it was so bloody cold outside.

Stop/start could be one of about a dozen things - do a search on here, and theres a post somewhere with all the conditions needed for it to work; the favorite one is a failing battery.
E87 118d, stock, plus PDC control unit drain, Parrot, debadged, Mothercare baby shades (but no babies), and occassionally a good layer of wax. Instantly forgettable, and thats the way I like it.

Coolant leak are common I feel in these.
I suffered.

Mine was behind the engine where a plastic part had split.

The cold air will be due to expansion tank being too low I think.

The start stop is possibly due to temperature outside being so low.

Sorry the car a 12 REG 2012 plate

I took another look at the bottle and it was completely empty! I added coolant plus water and took it for a spin.

Came back <1m and the engine started to steam near the turbo - any idea?.

Its going into Berry BMW in Chiswick on Thursday, i will just have to keep topping up the coolant.

Seems like you’ve found the leak then.

I have a similar issue where the heater doesn’t go hot anymore and that the coolant tank is leaking somewhere.
The vehicle was purchased brand new in 2012 116i
Anyone know where I can start to look as I don’t see any puddles
