Electricial fault e87

Post by Jready » Sat Mar 17, 2018 8:27 pm

Hi,

I have a 116i e87 with 63k
I’ve never had a problem with it until today.
So I opened the boot when we were out loaded it up, shut it and drove out the space and then the boot open symbol so I stoped open the boot and shut it again. This didn’t stop it so I repeated this a couple of times then gave up and start driving home either the warning going of knowing the boot was closed.

Then many 1/2 a mile down the road the Rev counter dropped out then went right up then the speedo started so the same ( car was running fine)
And also a constant clicking from (I’m guessing ) a relay in the glovebox.
Continuing down the road the car intermittently continued with the faults and then the front wipers started randomly going! Then stopped up. So I turned the on and off and they went back to normal.

Then by the time we got home everything but the boot warning stopped, I turn it of emptied the car then started it and when for a drive and it was okay apart from a constant clicking from the relay in the glovebox.

Now I have had a look in here and some faults people have had and checked the earths in the wings and checked the passenger side for water.

I have just checked the alternator which is 14.4volts
Now the battery was at 12.8 but did drop of to 11.9
Now obviously the battery is nackered but surely if the car is charging okay then whilst it’s running there should be any problems ?

Sorry it’s a long one

Thanks in advance

If you've got parking sensors have a read of http://www.babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=22506, the control unit in the boot can get wet and causes all kinds of weird electrical gremlins.

So I striped the boot down this morning and took the pdc out and the circuit board and its pristine.

I’m going to change the battery as it isn’t great and go from there

How old is the car?

Might be worth checking the cables that run from battery under the car. From within the boot, you can see where it connects through the floor (via a bolt); if there is any corrosion on that, then its worth getting underneath to look at the other end of that bolt. Quite often the cables corrode at the connection, and it could be the pre-cursor to a complete inability to start. If it is corroded, the fix 'aint difficult :)
E87 118d, stock, plus PDC control unit drain, Parrot, debadged, Mothercare baby shades (but no babies), and occassionally a good layer of wax. Instantly forgettable, and thats the way I like it.

It’s a 2004, I changed the Battery as it wasn’t very well anyway but this hasn’t helped the rear wiper and rear windows still dont work also whist sitting in the car with it running there is a relay clicking in the glove box and also the radio changed channel

So from what’s happening the rear wiper/rear windows and the are constantly not working then the Rev counter
Speedo are intermittent and the. The radio, boot warning and front wipers have only happened once.
Bearing in mind that this started less that 24hours should

Thanks all

Did you code the new battery to the car? You can't just fit a new one willy-nilly if it has an IBS.

No I didn’t as I don’t think it has it, from what I read last night it’s on the negative terminal?

So I have a little update ( not that I’m any closer to solving it. I borrowed a friends code reader and found the following under the JBE and JBE2 sections:
A6E3- central locking drive, rear window
A6DE- mirror/spray- nozzle heating, left
A6DD- roller sun-blind/ luggage compartment cover

A6CF- AUC Sensor
Then these were in other sub sections.

2DDA DME - no message for cas
2DCF DME - no message from instrument cluster
2F50 DME - no message from instrument cluster

ABD0- control module fault
A3BD- central gateway module (ZGM) communication fault
A33A- transmission control unit communication fault
AC3C- odometer Message, communication fault
A3AD- engine control unit message, communication fault
A3B9 - dynamic stability control (DSC) communication fault

I have only just read them so haven’t sat done to work out what’s what or in fact if any of them are old

Any help is greatly appreciated

Reset them all, and see which codes re-occur.

So I reset them all and these 3 have come back.
Under jbe/ jbe2
A6E3- central locking drive, rear window

A6DD- roller sun-blind/ luggage compartment cover

Under Foot well modules
A33A- transmission control unit communication fault
