Sky won't cover my M240i

Post by ryanm » Wed Mar 29, 2017 5:23 pm

It's a standard car apart from a silencer delete pipe. I'm 31, self employed web designer, no convictions, no points, 12 years no claims. Nothing out of the ordinary and all the mainstream insurers come back with prices fine. I am now puzzled!

"None of our underwriters are prepared to insure your vehicle."

That is pretty worrying! Anyone else experience this with Sky Insurance?

Is it your first RWD car?

A forum sponsor doesn't insure people in their first RWD car or if they step up a bit on power.

As i was told, 'its not really their bag'. They're more imports, modified etc. Adrian Flux quoted me circa £2.1k this morning to change to the 140, stating my current underwriter wouldn't cover me and they'd have to change to another. Finalised my quote tonight with esure for £464. However need to pay Flux £58ish to remove the NCB from my current car so i can use on the new one.

Insurance pah  :piss2:

Their loss my friend ..... keep searching, as you will undoubtedly get a good quote if you look around and don't fall into all the traps of assuming that what you are telling them is what they want to hear.

Obviously, as you have done, ensure they have full details of any mods etc, but don't assume that, for instance, keeping it in a garage overnight will reduce your premium any. Depending on where you live, that and other answers can actually raise the premiums.

Don't ask me why, but you seriously need to play around with comparator sites to get the result you're seeking.

Good luck.

They only asked my last car, nothing previous to that.

Anyway, Admiral offered my renewal at £730, a £15 increase on last years policy stating rises in taxes. Comparison sites were £620 with those high excess quotes and around the £680 mark for the rest with reasonable £400 excess. After a 10 minute call the Admiral, telling them the quotes which were available they came back at £590 so i'm happy enough with that sticking with the same company. Sky's loss!

Maybe they should re-think their forum sponsorship. I know everyone's circumstances are individual etc. but at least come back with a price rather than just refuse the vehicle.

I've just upgraded from a 120d to a M135i. I was 10 months into a policy with Octagon and they wouldn't insure me on the new car! So had to cancel the policy and lose 10 months of no claim build up! Crazy world this insurance business!

I just got a quote on my 135i for sub £500 with all my mods declared etc. Brentacre (who were highly recommended) wanted over £1k as its a high risk vehicle....

Seeing what Chris Knott say as with them currently and going from there. Been with Sky before though and they were fine, just couldn't do me a great quote on my MX5 so i left them

Craziness is buying a new car without checking whether you can get insured on it.

Little bit harsh jallen - nothing in this world is perfect and we all make errors now and again, so why be so condemning? :(

Why? I would rather take a hit on 10months NCB than lose a car with a cracking deal on offer.

It's not the end of the world.

I moved house 3 years ago and I couldn't get insured in my new place as it hadn't been updated on the insurance database/s - best quotes I had were around £500 more expensive than what I was paying at the time.

In the end, only 5 insurers were able to offer me a policy - even Confused, Compare, etc couldn't.

Went with expensive one, then without 2 months the insurance DBs updated and suddenly it was only £300 pa instead of £800!

There was all the excuses rolled out on the news last week why insurance policies will be rocketing up.

It was the same crap about how modern cars are expensive to repair.

Managed to get it down to £436 now so happy days. Strangely, if I declare it as garaged it's £494, Drive is £475 ish and parked on the road is the £436. Just need to decide which option to tick as I do all three being honest, garage, drive and road.
