235i, 240i etc Any TC issues running 225/40/18 and 255/35/18?

Post by Andersuk » Wed Dec 06, 2017 6:15 pm

Just installed Nokian WR A4 winters, 225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear on 400M wheels, 8J front and 8.5J rear, on an M240i. Wheels fit great BTW. However, the traction control is working overtime even in bone dry conditions. I know the tyres are not fully scrubbed in yet but from experience this amount of TC interference is not normal in dry conditions.

I am wondering if the additional rolling radius of 255 vs 245 is confusing the TC? Anyone running the same tyres sizes having similar issues? Or those running 225/40 front and 235/40 rear?

Thanks

255/35 won't hurt.

What pressures are they?

2.1 bar front and 2.2 bar rear. TMPS's reset and recalibrated too.

The difference in overall circumference front/rear needs to be less than ~2% or the ESP will think one end of the other is over/under rotating.
Use one of the tyre size comparison sites to see what difference it is from stock sizes

There’s less 4mm difference in circumference between 225/40 and 255/35 so well inside the 2% quoted above

With default sized tyres the rears have a lower rolling radius than the fronts and I expect the ECU expects such. Now they are almost the same and maybe the ECU is expecting more rotation from the rear?

No, they're perfectly happy with 235/40 rears, which are larger again. Yours are the same size difference as having brand new 245 rears, mated to slightly worn fronts. Negligible and no issue.

I'm guessing they just need 100+ miles to scrub the stickers off.

Even pulling away from a stand still it appeared to struggle but I agree, if 235/40 hasn't presented an issue then 255/35 shouldn't be a problem. I'll put a few more miles on them and see what happens.

I put my winters on the other day, 225/45/17 front and rear. And the yellow flashy lights came on, a lot. And I've got an lsd.

Seems to have settled down now though, so I wonder if it is a feature of winters tyres to be slippier when new. More mold release chemical in all the grooves?

Hope yours sort themselves out too.

I'm running 225+255 and having 0 issue.
Pressure around 2.3
Even in winter configuration my mount would remain the same.

Tyres have settled down now. These WR A4's offer good grip in the wet and performed great in the snow. Was driving through almost 15cm+ at Stansted yesterday without any issues. Shame the flight was cancelled though.
