space saver

Post by Andykg » Fri Sep 01, 2017 10:21 am

im debating whether to ditch the run flats on the front and get normal then change the rears when they need it too. Trouble is I got 215/40/18 on the front and 245/35/18 on the rear so i cant just get a full size spare so will need to get a space saver instead. Im guessing a 16 or 17 space saver will work ok? ive only got a 2010 116D m sport LCI model so theres nothing different about brake sizes etc?? Can i run the space saver on the front or back in the event of a puncture? read a few places you can only run them on the back.

thanks

You could happily run a front wheel on the rear as a spare, if you wanted to. Putting a 215/40/18 back there temporarily would be far more stable than a 125/80 SS (or whatever).

If you do prefer a space saver (much less boot space robbed), you can run them front or rear, but you obviously have to take it easy while you tip-toe about.

If you're buying a 2nd hand SS, make sure you check the date code on the tyre. Lots of those SS are from E46 3 Series, and the 15 year old tyres are basically unreliable junk now.

Any old BMW 16" should fit yours, in theory (unless you have upgraded brakes).
