245/35/18 Winter tyres

Post by saguaro1900 » Thu Sep 07, 2017 11:35 am

Hi there, just wondering if anyone is selling 245/35/18 winter tyres for a F21 M sport. I live in the north east of Scotland and this is my first year with the 1 series so think it would be safe to fit some, I can only find one set new online but are close to £300 a tyre! any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Craig

Most people including me put 235/35 18s on instead as there is much greater selection. I have Nokian WR A4 which are great in my opinion.

ok thanks, I presume you swap over wheels as well as tyres then during winter?

You can do either. Last year I just swapped the tyres over but I've now got another set of wheels to put the winters on.

ah right I see, so 235 tyres will fit and work fine when fitted to a 245 wheel?

Most of us actually fit 235/40/18 95Y (rather than the 235/35 suggested above), which fit perfectly on our 8" rear rims.

Mine are Nokian A4

ok thanks, sorry just wasn't grasping the fact it is fine to change the width of a tyre on a car, I presume this is fine to do and has no affects?

BMW actually suggest stretching a 225/40 Winter on the standard rear wheels, but that usually gives you zero rim protection and little dry grip, in my experience.

245/35 would be better than 235/40 imo, but they're such a rare size it makes them mental money. Sadly 255/35 won't safely mount on an 8" wide rim.

yea I cant find any second hand tyres for sale at all, the only new ones are Pirellis for £300 a tyre. I would prefer to have the correct tyre size on my car as well tbh

So you have 235/40/18 on 245 wheel and have not had any issues then?

I have 235/40/18 on 8.5" wheels which are bigger than yours and have no issues. Obviously it's easier to break traction but you have to accept that you're not going to be stamping on the load peddle. But this one down side is made up for by the wet grip and grip at low temperatures

ok thanks for the advice, noticing more options for sale at 235/40/18 so I will go down that route for this winter!

I personally think 225/40/18 front and rear will be fine (and much easier to source) even on staggered rims.. It's only 0.5" wider on the rear... Just need to be a little careful parking near kerbs that all :)

It's not much extra money for the 235 rears, so I'd choose them again... Even the 235s are very compromised in the dry.

Each size of wheel can take a range of different width tyres. With luck MP will post up his handy little table.
