235/40/18 on stock m135 front wheels?

Post by git-r2 » Thu Oct 26, 2017 3:22 pm

Can anyone confirm if I’ll be ok running the 235 wide tyre on the stock front wheels? (I think they’re 18x7.5).

Thanks :)

Yup, you could. It will look like a Penny-Farthing though, 225/40 are already taller than the 245/35 rears!

Or would you go for a 235/40 square tyre set-up?

Thanks Marco.

I’m completely undecided.

As usual!

My supply of ad08rs are much more expensive now :(

225/40/18 are 180 for 2 tyres
235/40/18 are 230 for 2tyres

4x255/35/18 are 460 - I paid 360 last year!

Westlake and zestino both do track tyres similar to ad08 and are about 70 ish each.

Thinking about just running 225/40/18 all round.

Are you more interested in impressive Lap times, or having fun drifting about?

Lolol!!

I’m aftaid it would appear the latter!

I’ve gone and done something a bit stupid... 4x225/40/18 of the cheap Chinese variety are being delivered to a tyre fitter near me...

The other name that I’ve never heard of didn’t have stock and after doing the usual shopping around ended up with westlake RS sport.

Will update my thread with results for anyone interested.

Any update? I heard some good things about Westlakes the other day. Coming to the same conclusion of a square setup 225 40 18 on 7.5 rims may be the most fun per pound option for track days. Leaning towards Nankang NS R jobs at about £100 per corner. Your comments about m4 lca not (greatly) helping shoulder wear, and also the noise implications of a top plate camber adjuster, elsewhere is definitely pushing me towards cheap track tyres, and ability to rotate them round the car would not be a bad thing.

Not really mate, I’ve done two track days on them; one was very wet and the other dry.
The car doesn’t feel as nice to drive with them like they would with MPSS etc but it’s fine, very good dry grip and £70 each.

I’d still probably go for AD08R’s over these though, purely because they’re quieter and feel nicer. eBay user bankofe.b.a.y should sell 225/40/18 for £90 each.

I think the LCA’s are still worth doing as they will help with tyre wear and give more grip, when you get it done you can get them to adjust the rear camber and id go for same as front, the rear edge wear is just as bad as the front otherwise. I’d really like to find someone with the top mounts to see what they’re like and how much extra they’d give. You proabalt know this but with some cars unless you run them quite low you don’t get much camber with top mounts.

The west lakes in 225 on the back with had no issues putting the power down, very impressed. Most track tyres are impressive the first time though...

What is putting me off the LCAs is the drop in ride height. 10mm plus the 10mm I will lose when the Bilsteins go in will probably have me scraping the road around here.

The Camber plates I am looking at are:
http://www.millway.se/camber-plates-bmw ... re=swedish
They move the top upto 27mm, so upto -3.5degrees. At just under £300 is a lot for what I want, but if they work.... Need to get them fitted at the same time as the Billys as I don't fancy two lots of labour charges. I'd be happy with something non adjustable, a fit and forget off centre hole hole; but I cant find any any.

Also wonder what moving the mount an inch does to clearance on the front tyre.

And I am looking at new rims with track day tyres, and am torn between 225 40 18 on 7.5j, and 235 40 18 on 8j using a square setup.
Do you think an 8j, et 45 with a 235 will rub on the front? And if I move the top mount?

Big part of me is thinking to just accept the tyre wear, and rotate them on square setup. Cheapo tyres at £80 a time might be cheaper (and less complicated) than playing with camber angles on the front.

Lol i was in the same position as you and considered the mill way top mounts.

I’m not sure about wheel figment but depending on how many track days you do that’d dictate whether it’s worth going for more camber.

I hate noisy suspension and can’t help but constantly listen for noises when going over bumps, if I hear anything i can’t stop listening to it lol so it really does my head in!

Spare wheels are always best but it’s whether you can be bothered to change them, I’ve taken spare wheels to track days before but found it a real chore changing before and after.

Please keep us posted if you choose the Milwaukee top mounts, if you found them to work I’d go for a set.

McT,

Good choice - Millway camber plates have a great rep with lots of folks on German 1er, 2er and 3er forums.

If you decide to stay OEM (my preference on my M135i) and fit M4 TS's with M4 LCA's the nose drop of LCA's doesn't happen - priceier I know but very robust as you will have oem parts and same bushes for both pairs of lower arms. Wheel sizes - I ran style 397 8" et34mm all round on H&R sport springs 225/245 MPSS F&R with M4 LCA's only - zero rubbing. When I added M4 TS's, I went for wider 8.5" et47mm rear wheel - still style 397 to match the existing fronts - and switched to Birds B1s springs I was planning on putting 245/35 and 255/35 MPSS F&R but then I sold the car before I did so.

If using standard F2x front arms then 8" et45mm might limit yr (wider) front tyre choice due to lack of inner clearance. I'd recommend going for 8" et32mm to 42mm as this range will allow to fit 245/35/18 all round, esp if are aiming at a square set of 8" et 38-42mm F&R.

Git-R2 - if want max camber with min NVH - M4 LCA's - you have on already - are the way forward until SPL come out with street version of their F8X race LCA's..... BP

Sam,

SPL make adjustable LCA's for F8x so will fit Mlites - currently they make the 'RACE' version - top photo below - which has no ball joint attachment on front LHS LCA for headlight leveller - SPL advises they have a F8x STREET version coming soon which does have the ball joint - lower picture is STREET version of SPL e92 LCA

Thanks BP,
I have pasted this quote into another thread which is probably more relevant than in a Tyres/Wheels forum. It is here:
viewtopic.php?f=74&t=104817&p=1347270#p1347270

I am interested in this - so hope to get part numbers then a quote. I am also anxious about road/tyre noise, so am suspicious of camber plates.

WRT the wheel sizes, am I correct reading that 8 inch rims, with an et40 and 435 tyres would be an ideal square setup? Even with the LCA/TS changes? If there is any doubt, I may not take the risk and stay on 225s on 7.5s

Cheers

Can you confirm tyre width and profile please, 435mm sounds a bit on the wide side....
