Buckled Wheels!!!

Post by 2Stevo2 » Wed Feb 28, 2018 8:08 pm

Chaps,

To say im angry is an understatement.

As a few of u know from a previous thread I started, I was to get my wheels refurbished Gunmetal grey from the standard silver.

On Friday, I dropped the car off at a trusted wheel specialist I know, near to where I live.

A few hours later, the main technician phoned me to tell me that upon initial inspection, 3!!!!!!!....Not 1 or 2 but 3!! of my 461M alloys are slightly buckled!

I couldnt believe it so I went down and he expertly demonstarted that they were. For ur info i only purchased the car in September from BMW and have reported to them on numerous occasions that i could feel a vibration when u went past 75 but they fobbed me off time and time again (including telling me that they had searched for buckles and didnt find any).

I can put my hand on my heart and say I havent hit any major potholes, kerbs etc. And to look at, even close up they are immaculate.

Are these wheels made from clay?!?

Brie.

I wouldn't throw good money after bad replacing them or having them refurbished, I'd get some nice tough forged wheels instead.

Well its funny you say that as Ive just had that conversation. Even if I got a full new set from BMW ( obviously wont happen) I see no reason why it wouldnt happen again.

That is shockingly bad, what the hell are bmw thinking. Surely this worthy of a consumer watchdog or something similar

It is utterly rediculous if you ask me.

Even a quick google search and any1 can see that it is a well documented problem with BMW alloys. Falls way below what I would expect from a so called premium brand.

Moving forward, im not wasting anymore of my time with taking it back to BMW. Utterly pointless.

Now on the hunt for a new set of aftermarket alloys.

Good plan, make sure they're forged (and not cast). Sometimes also known as Flow Formed, Roll Forged, etc. Oz call them 'HLT' just to confuse matters.

MAK Luft-FF make some nice Flow Forged rims in 18x8" ET43 for example: https://www.performancealloys.com/wheel ... px?ID=8266

Or how about some forged Konig Interform's at Et42: https://www.performancealloys.com/wheel ... px?ID=6051

Excuse my ignorance but am I right in saying that, in short, you have kept the size of the OEM rears and ditched the slighly slimmer front? I assume they fit jst fine?

Stock tyres will fit perfectly on 8" rims. The fronts will look slightly stretched compared to the rears, but are actually an ideal fitment:

Marco,

Forged wheels are clearly the way to go, as you know, but by god they're expensive!!!!

Apologies for jumping in on this thread but have been effected by a similar situation recently. All 4 alloys buckled. I’ve had them straightened, but think I can still feel vibrations through the steering wheel. This set me back £240 to fix. I think the best bet is to get myself some new alloys all together. Though the ones suggested above Marco are around the £1000 mark, and my budget is around £500 if possible. Have you any recommendations?

I have a year 12 F21 so pre lci 125D currently with standard 18” 386M alloys attached to Pirelli P Zero tyres. So needing some replacements that would fit these tyres ideally within budget.

Did have a look at the 397 style alloys but wasn’t sure this would fit pre lci cars correctly. Given I have the tyres already. https://shop.bmw.co.uk/INTERSHOP/web/WF ... CatalogID=

£1,000 sounds about right to be honest, mine were significantly more than that.

Buy cheap = buy twice. :(

Appreciate the response Marco and agreed. I will have to cough up the money! With regards to sizing for an order on the Konig Interform. Can you direct me to which ones I should be looking to get based on what I said previously. I can see it will be the 18 x 8J, am I just going for the standard fitment? As I see they have 5 fitment options available. My fronts currently are 7.5J. Will this be an issue? Apologies for the newbie questions.

You spoke of the durability of these alloys and how poor the BMW ones are. Are you of the same mindset with regards to the 405M alloys also? As that could potentially be an option, though if they’re built like crap I’ll steer away.

Have you read the M-Lite FAQ sticky in full? viewtopic.php?f=74&t=89536&p=1389489#p1389489

Konig Interform's 18" x 8J at ET42: https://www.performancealloys.com/wheel ... px?ID=6051

Stock tyres will fit perfectly on 8" rims. The fronts will look slightly stretched compared to the rears, but are actually an ideal fitment.

Per the sticky, Genuine BMW 405m and 624m are actually the exception to the rule, being good quality forged rims. You obviously get 1/2" less tyre wall protection with a 19" though, so they'll never handle potholes quite as well as a forged 18" wheel.
