What winter tyres to get?

Post by ironcross13 » Tue Dec 01, 2015 11:15 pm

Hi guys i need some all season or winter tyres for driving in Europe as there is laws you have to have them

i have 118 M Sport. what is the best and cheapest tyres to get?
front is 225/40/18
back 245/35/18

seen these for the front from a different thread
http://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/k ... e=33881145" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

can't seem to find any for the back only 245/40/18
http://www.blackcircles.com/catalogue/k ... e=33881145" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

but i need runflats as my car has no spare wheel

The new law also spells out what a “winter tire” is. Specifically, it is an M+S-Reifen, a mud-and-snow tire that has an official M+S (Matsch und Schnee) marking on it. (M+S tires do not have to be “winter” tires. All-year or all-weather M+S tires also qualify.

Cheers Guys

Hi did you get anywhere? I had Goodyear ultragrip winters which made a huge difference in the colder weather. Impressed with them and also tried the bridgestones which again were impressive

Just traded in my 1series so I'm now selling the mint alloys with the RFT Goodyear winters which still have a winter or two on them.

Looking for around £500 which would be about the price of winter tyres alone and would save you hassle of changing tyres. Link if interested to my for sale ad http://babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=81856

+1 for Goodyear Ultragrip. In the limited colder weather we've had I've found them to be very good so far. Hoping for snow these next few weeks to really test them!

I'm running Continental WinterContact TS 850 non runflat on a square 225/40R18 setup. So far I have been very pleased with this setup, although it is not what you would consider as cheap.

And to be honest, best and cheap doesn't go hand in hand. Winter tires are not where you want to save your money. You have a BMW, don't use some cheap ass sh*t :mrgreen:

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is your friend here.

I would not recommend a staggered winter setup, since it will not handle good in snow. Actually a 225 wide tyre is the widest I would recommend for winter use.

Just my 5 cent :)

Avon/Cooper winter tyres I run on my 118d never let me down in snow and quite substantially cheaper :D

Mr Polo,

I know this is a real old thread but you might have answered exactly what I had got to.
After weeks of looking I think I've decided to use stock wheel for winters and get a decent lighter set for summer. Especially when I found out my 719's are heavy.
But what tyres to use on the stock 7.5J/8.0J?
I don't like the idea of putting 225's on rear 8.0J. Not enough rim protection.
So I've got to idea of Conti TS850, 225/40R18 92V on front and 235/40R18 95V on rear. Only 1.2% diameter difference between front and rear although 2.4% difference between 235/40 and 245/35 (stock).
Any idea if different load index front/rear would make much difference?
Or should I go 235/40 square? That worries me a bit; possible more oversteer?
Any thoughts?

225/40R18 92V on front and 235/40R18 95V on rear sounds perfect to me.

Not sure I am allowed to do this, so delete away if this is wrong, but I just picked up 4 shiny new 381 alloys with 225 45 17 michelin Alpin run flat from Eastleigh BMW for £400 today.

I think they have another set advertised on ebay as buy it now £500, but with the "make me an offfer" option. I'd suggest pitching in at £400 (or less!)

I have no affiliation with the sellers, just trying to flag up a potential bargain.

Hope they fit...

Kind of trust the sticky in the 140 section that said they would. That said, they look like they will as they are quite "shallow". Will try tomorrow, and if they dont I'll take it on the chin and sell them on. Cant see I'll lose much as the tyres alone are worth north of £400.

I need to get TPMS for them, but holding off ordering until I'm sure they fit.
