Removal of Rear light cluster F20 M140i

Post by Tom314 » Sat May 13, 2017 11:18 am

Hi everyone,

I was trying to remove my rear light cluster (wanting to switch to LED lighting) but I'm running in to a clearance issue, I was wondering if people usually see this or not.

Currently trying with LH cluster.
The procedure I'm following is as described in the manual 1- remove nut (without dropping it!) 2- pull to release top RH rubber mount 3- pull outside on light cluster to release LH rubber mount.
Up until this point it's easy, but I can't remove the light cluster without distorting the bumper, is this normal?

This is a link to a picture of the problem. Plastic tab (A) always hits the bumper at (B) (and it'll require more than light persuasion to get around it). The stud comes out roughly the same distance as the bumper is away so I can't bring the plastic tab over it so I can pull the light up and out, a rotation (as suggested by the manual) results in the plastic tab hitting the bumper and I can't push it towards the right any more because of the stud and the rest of the plastic housing hitting the lip for the boot. Any videos I've found (which are few and not very helpful) make it look like it should just slide in as if the plastic tab was cut away where the arrow is point.

Any Suggestions of how to solve this? I could take it to the dealer and say it's not possible to change the rear bulbs please rectify the problem but I'd like to make sure I'm not being stupid :)

Hi, sorry to bump my own post but if anyone has any suggestions or has removed their own rear light clusters and find it easy I'd appreciate the response.

It looks like the lights may be fitted before the bumper so it may well be a bumper off job

I've removed my taillights a bunch of times.

Clearance is pretty tight and a few profanities were shouted in to my boot.

However after plenty of wiggling and trying to remain calm, they did come away.

Any pics?

Thanks, there is a pic linked in my post, I tried embedding the picture but it wouldn't work for me when hosted by Google drive for some reason. If you want any further pictures please ask.

Did you have to distort the bumper at all to get it off?

Right, so I managed to remove the light clusters after much swearing and pushing the bumper at "B" towards the outside of the car.
A piece of either shoddy workmanship or poor design. All the previous cars I've had I've never had to distort anything to change something as simple as a bulb. At least it's not a Renault Megan headlight bulb (iirc).
