Bluespark vs JB+ vs JB4 ... all on one chart

Post by sgb27 » Wed Oct 11, 2017 6:31 pm

Sorry to start yet another thread, but I thought this chart I made was interesting to show.

To cancel out any arguments about stock power levels, dyno fudging, wheel or brake horsepower, HP or PS etc, I've taken the *percentage* increase in power between stock and Bluespark/JB+/JB4, according to charts from the Bluespark and burger websites.

The biggest difference I see is the Bluespark gives a lot more power increase at low RPMs (under 3500), I've not driven one, but I imagine this makes it feel much faster when being used for normal road use. At the other end of the range, once you get above 6000 rpm the JB+ and JB4 start to show better improvements, but this is likely to be less noticeable on the road unless you're doing a drag strip timed run when you're going to be up at 6000+ rpm for most of the time.

Not sure whether it's just me but as graphs go, they all look pants!!! All over the place, nothing smooth about any of them!!!

Nice work......but.......have they used the same dyno? Same fuel octane?

You’d be better off collecting data from UK cars on a particular type of dyno.

Blue spark and Dinan Sport and the JB+ use just boost to get more HP. The result should be very close to similar (given same boost increase).
JB4 and Dinan Elite change more but most would go to drivability, smoothness and/or modifies environments (and the JB4 has higher boost options if you use race fuel)

i think the only way to tell the real world results is to get a car running each setup on the same dyno on the same day then compare

What an absolutely pointless graph.

looking at the graph i thought jb+ was the same as jb4 map 1?

I think the OP used the Burger charts which is for a 340i so not even the same car with the same power output? Unless he can confirm..

I think another thing that is confusing now is that BMS have now changed all the maps with latest JB4 firmware so the old map1 is same boost as the new map 2 and the old map 2 boost is now same as new map 3... The new map 1 is now a lower boost 3psi for those who want option of a milder tune (winter use perhaps?)

Yes you're right, I used this chart from the other thread, didn't spot it was 340 not 140. If someone can point me to a before/after graph for the Mx40i I'll update the chart.

Is it just me, or is that the worst graph I have ever seen.

You mean how un-smooth it is? That's just the data it's taken from, it's noisy, and when you work out a delta, the noise is relatively worse.

I think it's pretty useful though, as it's difficult to measure by eye how much increase you get across the rev range from the dyno graphs, especially when they all claim different performance as "stock".

Let's have a look at your input/graph then...

I for one think it's a useful graph but I do agree it would be better with the same car on one set if rollers to get a more accurate comparison

I think your graph is a good attempt with what you have worked with. There are already graphs of the JB4 and the Bluespark from the Performance Centre, which are UK cars, in the UK on the same dyno, albeit not the exact same car. I think it would be better putting the power curves on top of each other rather than the percentage gains.

I always find this thing great for this kind of work: http://plotdigitizer.sourceforge.net/ its a simple tool that lets you digitise images, great for re-plotting graphs. If the wife hasn't got me gardening in the dark again I might have a go later.
