F20 P1338 Error

Post by bmwdean » Sat Jun 17, 2017 2:43 pm

Hi all,

I have an issue with my 116i showing Drive Train warning and stating full power unavailable.

I have run diagnostics and keep having error code P1338.

I have changed the oil, oil filter and spark plugs and the error appeared after completing this.

I have done some research, it seems that it could be related to the Cam Sensor.

I just have a few questions.

1. Which is the Cam sensor as there is 2 sensor quite close together?

2. When I run diagnostics it shows as a pending error?

3. When the I start the engine it runs OK then the error comes on the display and then the engine starts to behave erratically?

Hopefully someone can help me out with this.

TIA
Dean

My guess is it's not seeing the sensor intermittently. Could you have disturbed it (or it's cabling), whilst changing your plugs?

I'd be double checking the connections, making sure the cables aren't being pulled by the engine cover, etc.

Code states misfire on clyinder2?

A few things possible. If it's only started since the works you need to back trace your steps checking every plug and contact you home across. Possible you've tweaked something.

Although plugs come factory gapped it's not uncommon to see one very slightly tweaked in transport. Worth setting all to the same. Whilst in that area check the coil to plug contact spring.

Also what oil grade did you use? Incorrect grades can cause issues with timing chain tensioners throwing timing out periodically.

Thanks for your help with this.

Marco-polo - I checked the sensor and cabling and everything seems fine.

Beefy - I put in 5-30 fully synthetic. The car had been starved of oil. So my guess this will have contributed.

After plugging back into the car I have now found another error stating "Intake camshaft: angle offset with respect to crankshaft outside tollerence"

When you say starved of oil, how so? Was it just low on the dipstick or rattling low level? Possible lost chain tension and jumped a tooth maybe?

I pulled the dip stick out and there was next to none in there.

Timing does make sense as when I start the car it's fine for around 30seconds to 1 min then it shudders. Sounds like it's about to stall then is ok. If I rev it is also fine.
