Worth changing from 118d 2.0 to 114/116d 1.6?

Post by Ry_B » Tue Aug 29, 2017 4:51 pm

Hi

Currently drive around 15k a year, with this due to increase to around 25k, all motorway driving

Currently in my 118d 2011 (on close to 120k miles) I'm averaging 55.5mpg, without even trying to drive economically.

Due to my soon to be increased mileage, if I was to move to a slightly newer 1 series with the 1.6 Diesel engine (should I go for the 114d or the 116d?) , what kind of MPG would I expect on a motorway cruise at 60-70mph? If I was to push and drive on the autobahn at 100mph, what kind of MPG would this achieve?

Basically wondering wether it's worth swapping for a newer model with less miles and the smaller engine to increase my miles per gallon. Would I notice much difference between the two engines?

Any owners of both out there ?

To add to the MPG question, although speed isn't a big concern as I have a weekend toy, is there much difference in real world driveabiliry and speed ?

Main concern is MPG but if the 114d/116d drive like a bag of spanners then that'll be something to consider too!

Hi,

I have a 120d M Sport and average between 55-65mpg on a run, if driving like a nun. Whilst I can't answer your question from the perspective of owning a 116d or 114d, I was going to ask... If your current 118d is still serving you well, driving well and has no issues or mechanical failings, given its mileage and age, would it not be worth continuing to run it, service it and look after it?

The cost of the new car would far outweigh the slight improvement in mpg you may experience from the 114d or 116d, meaning you'd need to drive the new car for a very long time before saving money. In the meantime, you'll be driving a car which is inevitably less enjoyable to drive. I drove a 116d, once. Never again! I'm sure they're fine, but I much preferred the 120d.

As you said, you have a weekend toy for fun and speed, so if I were you, I'd drive my 118d forever more, or until something catastrophic happens to it and it naturally needs replacing.

I hope this at least gives something to consider, even if you don't agree :)

James

Hi James

See your point totally - the f20 118d has been faultless (touches wood!)

Truth is though as it's almost on 120k. So not sure how much longer this faultlesness will last for! so as I plan to buy something newer with less miles, should I go for the 1.6 diesel rather than the 2.0 this time round?

Is the 1.6 diesel much more economical - what MPG can be expected at motorway cruising/average?

Thanks again

I'd say not. My other half traded in an F21 116d (albeit that was also 2.0 I think) for an F45 218d a year ago and commutes around 15k miles a year on a mixed route. She's getting slightly better economy from the 218 than she did from the 116, I suspect because the car's not being asked to work as hard.

The two are also night and day in terms of driveability - for my tastes the 218 is a comfortably acceptable car to drive, it's brisk rather than quick obviously but it always feels responsive and you never feel vulnerable in it, whereas the 116 was a wheezy underpowered snail.

Hi OP,

For what it's worth; I have a 62 1.6 efficientdynamic and clock up a few hundred motorway miles per week. I typically get 70-73MPG on a tank when cruising around 70.

Haven't driven any other f20 models so couldn't compare.

Great - looks like it could save me some money then long term, and be a good upgrade too... I understand it's geared to Rev lower too? What is it revving at at 70mph?

At 70 it sits around 1700 ish. I know I was going to be doing a fair few miles so went specifically for the 1.6ed, I've been doing a few hundred motorway miles a week for the past 9 months, no issues at 63k

I'd go for another 118d if I were you.

I was loaned a 318d for a number of weeks, and motorway cruising could do journeys in the 60's mpg wise.
Your new mileage pattern would most likely take your average from 55 into the 60's, closing the gap on the smaller engined version. But it will still have a bit of drive in it when needed.

I had a 118d, my dad had a 114d, we would both get the same mpg on the same routes, so there's no real gains to be had.

Or go for an M140i, and you can still get 45-50mpg on a motorway run if you behave

I'd love an m140 but already got a toy! Need something purely for economy for day to day motorway mileage

It'll quite often come down to driving style than just simply engine size. If, for example you drive "spiritedly" then you may find the bigger engine to be best to have as a motorway cruiser at higher speeds than the 114/116d.

The wheezy 1.6 diesels are horrible to drive, and barely any better on fuel. I'd only swap if the 1.6d was significantly cheaper to buy.
