350 - 400bhp 125D project

Post by OK51MON » Sun Nov 12, 2017 6:15 pm

Projects are fun. Lets do one shall we ?

Current Setup and Spec;

BMW 2012 125d (Pre LCI)- Auto Box

Engine;
Ecotune Stage 2
Sports Cat
Milltek m135i exhaust
Walnut blasted Inlet Valves
Cleaned intake track of Carbon buildup.
EGR inlet valve removed and blanked.
Wagner Evo 2 Competition- Intercooler
Intake wrapped in Mishimoto Heat Defence gold tape

Gearbox

Stock- Auto Box- 8HP45 (Official max Torque rating- 500 nm - 370 ft lbs)
TMC Autoflash

Spec Note: This is a fantastic setup for anyone looking for a great driving car. I did multiple standing starts with an m235i and was neck a neck.

My intake temps on this setup are literally 4/5 degrees C over ambient at any one time , right the way up to 130 mph. Happy to log and Vbox to confirm.

The general consensus seems to be that you have to upgrade the fuel pump (to a 4.2 -335d) and fuel rail.

However, the 125D has a 4.0 fuel pump, so not really much difference there, am I right?

Thoughts and ideas much appreciated

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. What bhp and lb/ft are you at now?

Those specs are insane! If you have any videos of the standing starts vs the m235i feel free to post them, would love to see!

I have no video but happy to do one with a stock m135i/235i for anyone in the windsor slough area.

I need to get round to vboxing it for a 30-130mph time and then running it through the vbox dyno program for a truly accurate estimate of power figure

It dynoed at around 270 bhp and 390 ft lbs with high intake temps.

At a guess I would say 280/ 290 bhp with the turbos hardly breaking a sweat

Very interesting, I have a 125i and Ecotune say they'll get it to near enough 300bhp stage one. With the mods they've done to yours, these cars can become absolute weapons.

Turbos will be maxed out just over 300, hybrids and 640d pump and modified fuel rail (injectors too?) will see you to around 350 I believe

Be interesting to see what the auto box can take too as my manual box doesn’t seem to like my 420lbft and 5800rpm Rev Limiter

Before I go any further with this let me address some things in candid fashion.

Before any one writes any of the following;

"Why don't you buy a m135i/m140"
"You are better to spend your money on an M135i"
"You should join the Mickey Mouse m135i club and buy a m135i"
"What a waste of money you should put it on a m135i"

Please reframe from writing those types of comments here none of them are helpful or productive to this thread.

My focus for this car is diesel, daily, 60 mpg 350/400 bhp, reliable and safe.

Coming as an enthusiast from a Porsche Turbo tuning back ground I understand the complexities of tuning but diesel tuning is foreign to me so planning out a way forward on my own is difficult.

Lets talk about how/ if we can get to 350-400 bhp in a reasonable fashion that is would be accessible to other forum members. The general consensus seems to be that you have to upgrade the fuel pump (to a 4.2 -335d) and fuel rail.

However, the 125D has a 4.0 fuel pump, so not really much difference there, am I right

Ref Gearbox

Well the power rating stats are 500 nm max officially. However if you take a look at the video link below of a m135i with 560 bhp the driver states that the torque figure is around 700 nm. Granted the gearbox used in this is probably the revised ZF850 unit but , I can't see there be too much variation of the clutch packs.

Perhaps ever from Pure Turbos can chime in on the gearbox situation.

Ref Turbo

Ive been trying to get the compressor map for the Borgwarner 125D turbo with no joy from there website can anyone help.

A 270bhp 390lb/ft 125d isn’t going to be neck and neck with an M235i, assuming that is making correct power.

Sounds like a fun project, always liked the idea of having a quick diesel to play with :)

Good luck!

Claret if you are local and your car is stock I am happy to have a pull with you from standing and rolling (without launch). We can film it or invite some spectators if you like :starwars:

Dyno's, even well calibrated ones are never accurate IMO and are always out by 7-12% out. Its even worse calibrating a dyno to accurately make a single clutch auto transmission with torque converter.

Vboxing a car is the most accurate measurement or car performance and power.

Anyway we digress. Anymore thoughts of the fuel pump situation

Hi over here, I noted you'd sold your 996 Turbo on 911UK. Sounds like an interesting tuning challenge with 3 criteria; power, reliability and economy. Not 3 things which normally go together so proving it will be a good breakthrough.

Watching with interest. Cheers, Dave.

PS, I'm 'Endex' over there.
