Noisy heater fan

Post by whodareswins1 » Fri Dec 15, 2017 6:25 am

I can't help but think the heater fan on my F20 is a bit noisy. On the second fan setting and above it just sounds like the fan is a bit loose. The one on my E87 sounded much smoother. Is this a common problem?

Very early F20's suffered with leaf ingress, which sounded a bit like a motorbike apparently.

There's a revised grill/lid, iirc.

I had to replace the fan in my E87 because it got unpleasantly noisy, presumably due to worn bearings - squirting Teflon lubricant into it shut it up for an hour or so, but the noise always came back. That was after 75,000 miles or so, so unlikely to be your problem unless your car has done a lot of miles?

Depends what you mean by noisy / loose.

I can hear my fan as the speed increases, but you can't have complete silence when it's moving a lot of air.

Do you mean it actually rattles?

Just sounds like it's a bit loose. It's more than just the rush of air I can hear.

What access to the heater fan line? Straight forward?

On the E87, you removed the trim at the top of the front passenger footwell (three screws and one plastic clip, and it drops out). The fan is then accessible - one screw, one plug connector and twist and it drops out. So it was pretty easy on the E87 - the F20 ought to be similar, but I've not tried it.

I'd say it's more of a vibration really, through the dash. Particularly the highest setting.

I had what sounds like the same problem. My fan blower would sound very loud and "grumbly" when on or close to full speed.

As has been suggested in this thread, my noise was caused by dried leaves clogging up the fan. My local dealer cleared out all the leaves and fitted a grill which should hopefully stop any more leaves getting in.

Thanks for the help. Mine is just over 5 years old now so assuming it's out of warranty :(

My dealer charged me just over £100 for labour and the part, so worth contacting them.
