PreLCI F20 AC control retrofit

Post by djdelta » Wed Mar 28, 2018 4:47 pm

Hello everyone,

Seeing as I've been searching for some time without any success, I will bite the bullet and post my question.

Can I upgrade my AC control unit with an automatic simple climate control unit. Pictures for reference

Any help is much appreciated.

Well, I've taken the plunge and bought the auto AC unit due to it being only £50.

Will see how it behaves and feedback the results. Might need to check codes with some of yourselves.

Cheers,
Florin

Fundamentally there are 2 versions of heater controls: basis and high. The high ones correspond to option 534 in the VO. The one you now want to fit is still a basis model & specified for cars that don't have option 534 (your old heater controls tell me you don't have 534) so will (in my opnion) work straight away. Keep us posted.

Sorry to hi-jack. I'm just interested. Is the only difference the numbers on the heater knob? I've seen a version with an LCD panel where the dmist button etc are. What's option 534?

Option 534 is the 2 zone climate control with the display - like this:

The OP has single zone climate, and the main difference apart from the temperature numbers on the OP's post is the addition of an Auto button.

Climate control upgrades have been discussed many times though:
viewtopic.php?t=71920
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=49884

The general consensus is 'don't bother' going from the 1 zone climate control to the 2 zone (left/right) system as it's a case of ripping the dash out & fitting the full 2 zone kit, not just the control panel. But I stand by my earlier statement that replacing the older type 'basis' heater controls for the newer type basis controls should work. All you're adding it the Auto button, and there is no coding for the different parts in the VO. I can't comment on coding options within the appropriate module though.
I guess it depends where the cabin temperature sensor is. If it's in the controls, job done.

Ah thanks - I missed the auto button in the image. I'd be interested to know if this works djdelta. I'm surprised that my 12 year old Saab convertible has dual zone climate as standard yet my recently acquired 14 plate 118i sport has a very basic manual a/c.

Will see how it goes once it's delivered.

My research pointed me in the direction of "it should just work" but given the lack of information on this particular scenario it will be a test and see episode.

Will post updates when I have them.

Looking forward to an update on this. I’ll be impressed if it works. Do you have the part number for the new controller?

There are so many part numbers; it depends on whether you have heated seats or not, and whether you want the chrome surround or not, and whether you want temperature in C or F. The climate part unclips from the radio controls; you don't need both, but a lot of breakers sell both together as a unit. As such part numbers might be ambiguous.
The AUTO button appeared on LCI (facelift) cars, so the number for the heating controls only is:
Black Surround, No heated seats °C 64119384045
Black Surround, No heated seats °F 64119384049
Black Surround, Heated seats °C 64119384047
Black Surround, Heated seats °F 64119384051
Chrome Surround, No heated seats °C 64119384046

Good news - the cabin temperature sensor is part of the new heater controls, so no need for additional sensors. I'm even more convinced now it'll work straight away!

So, quick update today. I have fitted the part but no luck, when I press the AUTO button, nothing happens. Even if the AC is on and blowing it just doesn't do anything. Steering to feel that it needs some coding to go with it.

Possibly. Do you have e-sys? If so, it might be worth looking through some of the options to see if you can work it out. Otherwise if anyone else already has it as standard then they might be able to work out which option it is and let you know.

Hope you can sort it!

That's what I gather so far.

I have the esys as I've also retrofitted a hu_entrynav but not having much luck with that either.

Anyone willing to do a remote coding session?
