Photobucket no longer allowing images to be shared

Post by babybmwadmin » Fri Jun 30, 2017 11:01 am

All,
As of 28th June, Photobucket appear to not allow images to be shared across other sites, unless the user is willing to pay.
(it would have been nice to know this was happening.......)

Images are still stored on Photobucket, but not viewable here.

Therefore, the capability to upload attachments has now been opened up.

If you have any posts that contain Photobucket images, these images will no longer appear.
You will need to re-edit and upload the new images as appropriate.

You can "place inline" the attachments when editing your post.

If you have any issues, please let us know.

New Post with attachment, you will see this at the bottom:

Screen Shot 2017-06-30 at 11.03.53.png (9.94 KiB) Viewed 4537 times
When you click the Attachments, you can drag the file onto the message window, or Click the Add files button.

If you place the cursor in your post, and click the Place inline button, it will place the image at that point.

In the User Control Panel, you can manage all you attachments.

I thought file sharing was the whole point of Photobucket? I can store my pictures in loads of other places.

That's going to be a right pain for newbies looking up "how to" posts and the like.

I'm hoping that this workaround will get rid of repeating photo's with replies.

Yes it will be a pain.
I am hoping that post owners will revisit the guides and fix them.

Yes, I've just been hit by this as well. Basically the Photobucket business strategy was to 1) offer people free space for images, and let them build up a substantial portfolio of photos then 2) make the site so ad-intensive it was unusable and 3) offer an add-free subscription to put it back where it was. This clearly didn't have the desired take-up, so 4) they yesterday said that any external reference to a photo was a breach of contract and killed any external linkage, demanding a massive subscription to re-enable this. Presumably the idiot who thought this up believed that people would have no alternative but to pay, and all would be well. My guess is that this isn't going to work: after 40 years in business I'm sceptical that making your service unusable and then demanding payment to return it to usability isn't a good model. Holding your customers to ransom by unilaterally removing one of the main functions you provide (photo storage for social media and web businesses) and demanding payment doesn't seem a good approach either. As well as being nothing special in terms of ease of use, and inferior in terms of editing photos in situ, nor being particularly fast, the Ts&Cs indicate that there is no guarantee of security even for folders/photos marked as 'private'. Against their competitors, I can't see why anyone would pay for their service unless it was simply to unlock their existing photo storage in order to support existing blogs, business websites etc.

Sadly, I suspect that most members won't have the time to re-upload their photos, rendering older threads less useful. Hopefully, over the next few months, posters will transition to uploading their photos to the babybmw photo hosting instead.

sh*t! Can’t see me scouring my 4000 posts to replace the images! Will it leave a working link in place? Or will all access to a posted picture be dead without editing in old posts?

I have 2011 images showing, but some 2014 ones missing!
Perhaps they are updating the site year at a time?!?

It's a horrible user experience anyway, but I'll never find the time to re do all the pics I've added :(
Mine were just pics of my / others cars though.

All the 'How To' posts will be ruined! Some of them were created by members who have long since left these shores.

Wheel hall of fame? :(

My guess is, that PB are making a last ditch money grab, before winding the whole thig up !
