Sub £100 wireless router

Post by ihadablackdog » Sun Mar 04, 2018 7:38 pm

Looking for recommendations for a new router.

Currently got an Apple Airport Extreme (5th Gen, not the tall one). Its attached to an old Openreach VDSL modem. I think one of them is starting to become a tad flaky, so am thinking of replacing.

It sits in a small cupboard downstairs (it doesn't overheat),and the wireless signal is quite good all over the house, even upstairs.

I'd like to replace it with something newer, preferably with:

VDSL modem built in (I'm on BT FTTC and get about 30Mb/s)
4 Gigabit ethernet ports
1x USB3 port that will take an external hard drive (although thats not essential).

Ideally in the £100 range.

Currently have the 5Ghz turned off.

Devices connected are:

2x iPhone 6
1x iPad 4
1x Apple TV (3rd gen)
3x Sonos speakers
2009 Macbook Pro
Sky box wifi adapter

So nothing really up to date, therefore don't need anything flash.

Main use is browsing, email, youtube and lately streaming films etc. Only me and Deb, so not used by lots of people at the same time.

Have used the BT HH5 in the past, but from memory it wasn't very reliable.

Any recommendations that fit the above would be helpful and thank-you in advance.

I was going for this but moved to Plusnet and their supplied router is kind of ok so saved my £ for now. Make sure new version (only one usb port on the new version) https://www.tp-link.com/uk/products/det ... VR600.html

Sometimes under £80 if you wait :)

I literally (Friday) just got my Archer VR600 from Amazon, within 5 mins it was set up and replaced my BT Homehub 5 (sh*te)
Had nothing but trouble with the Homehub wifi, constant drop outs requiring on average 2 channel resets/changes per day. 5ghz just doesn't work on them and BT refuse to admit it.
I tried to get a smarthub from BT to see if that would be any better, but in the end thought sod it! I'll get a proper router.

So far I'm very impressed! As I said, set up was effortless, it connected up in minutes, even quicker than the Homehub. Connection speed and stats to the cabinet seem slightly better than the H5 was, and wifi is in a different league. Everything around the house re wifi is running much better.

For £80 I wonder why i didn't just do it sooner!

I'd be interested in a quality router that supports Plusnet fibre and has wifi strong enough to penetrate the whole house. Everything Ive tried up to now has been rubbish.

The TP-Link stuff works well on BT.

I was having issues with the BT HomeHub when I first got it a few years back so ditched it for a TP Link N600 IIRC and it's worked flawlessly since then! :)

The TP Link one I mention above would work fine with Plusnet fibre. It has integrated fibre modem for normal phone lines (not cable TV fibre / Virgin media)

I got this router: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Billion-AC1600 ... dem+router

It's really good although not the best looking router and the router settings page is quite basic but the wireless is very good :)

Had a quick look but it needs an external modem, so not what I was looking for, but have heard of Billion before and looked at them in the past.

For a VDSL/ADSL connection? It's got a modem built in, just plug the telephone cable right into the back
If you mean for virgin fibre etc then I'm not sure, I think most times you need to use their modem? But can use your own router with pass through maybe - not sure I haven't had Virgin in years, they don't serve my new house yet
