Dumb questions that don't deserve individual threads

Post by RSR182 » Fri Apr 21, 2017 11:44 am

Hey guys I've had my M140i auto for about 4 months now and was wondering if anyone could help with the following...

1. Is it possible to get a reverse gear selection beep? I've accidentally not engaged R twice and wouldn't like to do so again! Didn't have any accidents but it's waiting to happen I think.

2. Should the passenger mirror having dimming if I've paid for the folding mirror pack? My right one dims

3. Does any one have an engine oil replacement guide? I've not had a look to see where the sump plug is, and also would like to know how tight it should be done up.

Thanks

Hi RSR182,

1. I think t would be possible with an external module, but you don't drive a truck :)

2. Only the right mirror is going down.

3. For the oil replacement :
- open the oil cap on and under the motor
- open the oil filter cap
- let the oil drain
- close the oil cap under the motor after replacing it (25Nm, you can feel it while torquing)
- replacer the filter and torque the cap (25Nm too, it's written on it)
- put you new oil ;)

1. No idea though I know what you mean.

2. Dipping and dimming, separate things. Yes, my passenger side mirror dims along with the driver's side. The passenger mirror also dips when you select reverse if the mirror selection switch is to the right and does not dip it it is to the left.

3. Careful you don't invalidate the warranty. You might want to change the oil more regularly that the schedule perhaps, though IMO if you have paid for/are paying for a £35k car it's worth paying a few quid to the BMW dealer to get things done to spec.

Thanks for the replies guys

1. I just meant a cabin beep to let me know I've actually successfully selected reverse, so I don't need to look at my dash

2. I understand dipping is standard on the passenger side, I paid for the folding package which I understand includes anti-glare dimming, but only my rear view mirror and driver side mirror dims!

3. Understand it'll nuke my warranty... If they find out! I just can't bear to do 18k miles without changing it, especially when it's so easy to do myself. Fidiman - thanks for the torque

I believe the answer to 2. is it used to be the case that both dimmed but due to a spec change (when the m140i came out?) only driver one will now.

Really? It surely does not make sense that you still get dazzled from one of the three mirrors ...

Dumb questions that don't deserve individual threads

Post by sp218 » Fri Apr 21, 2017 12:50 pm

I think it's a safety thing. Due to the distance between ur eyes and the kerbside mirror any objects appearing in that mirror are small and difficult to spot. Dimming may make that even more difficult, particularly any vehicle approaching ur blind spot. Most manufacturers (my Merc was the same) have therefore deliberately left this out on the kerbside. Not sure whether this was a result of legislation change in some jurisdictions or perceived risk of or actual litigation but this is deliberate in any case.

Point 2: on the x40s they defo removed the passenger dimming on the wing mirror. I thought it was BMW cost saving but interesting other manufacturers have done the same.

The mirror isn't just the 1er, they've done it on the 3 and 4 too I believe, not sure about higher up the range

Definitely cost cutting!

I had folding auto dimming mirrors on my previous 2013 year 3 series (F30) and both dimmed. While the folding feature was handy, I remember reading on one of the forums about someone who got the drivers side one "taken out" by a passing car, and the cost to replace was horrendously high, so why I never specced on my M140.

Never realised that the auto-dipping feature of the actual mirror (passenger side), is also only provided with folding mirrors, typical BMW!! With the mirror movement being electric, every car, or at least the top spec ones, should have this auto-dipping function, regardless of whether the housing itself is electronically folded.

I don't understand how you could nearly have an accident, you have to push the selector forward to get reverse going through neutral en route so the worst that can happen is you get neutral unless you don't actually move it at all?

Well, I've not nearly hit anything yet in the two instances it occurred, but I can see it happening it if I don't change my habits and have a heavier right foot. Both times I've missed R, it stayed in D and didn't get N. I think it's possible I started pushing the shifter before I hit the button, regardless, it stayed in D and I'm sure I had pushed the lever as it's kinda hard not to notice the notch.
