first service oil

Post by Shawnlh » Tue Nov 14, 2017 8:14 pm

Hi Guys, first service time for my M135i :)

Im struggling to find Shell Helix Ultra ECT 0W-30 with the rating LL-04 for BMW's to supply for my first service, and the dealer said as long as its Shell LL-04 it will be fine

Its here on the shell website but cant seem to get it anywhere?
http://www.shell.co.uk/motorist/oils-lu ... 0w-30.html

Is this stuff on Opie ok even though it does not state bmw or LL-04 anywhere?
https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-92111-shel ... e-oil.aspx

Any help greatly appreciated :D

Best regards,
Shawn

Most mainstream Shell LL04 is 5w30.

Thats what i thought but most people recommend 0w30 for M135 and the only supplier of that that i can see is castrol with the LL04
What are BMW currently putting in at dealerships? Cheers

It's probably a Shell Helix proprietary 200 Litre special.

Their previous oil was a 'special' Castrol, known as Edge 'Professional' (which was a 0w30 LL04) - not widely available to the public.

Might just go for castrol 0w30 LL04 unless anybody can recommend something better?

i'm sure the dealership will not care either way but more chance of them being happy if its LL04 i guess :)

Cheers Marco

Hi mate,

I've not long dropped Castrol Edge 0w30 from my M135i and it did make the engine noisier from a cold start. It sounded tapperty for lack of a better word.

Has a main dealer service about 10k after and that noise has all but gone.

Next time I'll be using Shell.

0w30 shell is available from Opie Oils?

I'm sure I've seen it there before.

No, not available.

Factory fill would have been a thinner 0w20 LL14-FE, which might flow/protect those tappets better at cold start up?

I just ordered some Castrol edge titanium fst 0w30 which states LL04, I’m sure that’s what they used to recommend for the n55 anyway, was she’ll a recent change maybe?
Should be fine and they can’t moan about putting it in if it’s LL04 👍🏻 Cheers guys

Ah, may well have been 5w30 that I've seen in that case...

0w20 huh? Interesting.

I thought the oil had to be LL04?

Edit: I knew I'd seen it! Looks like Opie pulled it from their site. It was only available in 1L bottles.

N55 is LL04, B Series engines were designed for LL14-FE, I believe.

LL04 is acceptable though, just don't expect such good mpg.
