Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 or Michelin Pilot Sport 4

Post by petrolhead » Fri Aug 25, 2017 7:41 pm

Having spoken to several BMW technicians about any different between a 2015 car with RFT and a 2015 car with normal tyres, they have confirmed there is no difference apart from the tyres themselves.

They all, quietly, agreed that the RFT cars and not as nice as the non RFT cars.

My main reason is the noise the Bridgestone's make and the lack of compliance.

Having looked around I have shortlisted 2 tyres, Michelin Pilot Sport 4 or Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3. I favour the MPS4 over the MPSS due to reviews I have seen saying the 4 is a newer tyre with better wet grip.

I am not buying these for outright performance in the dry, heck I live in the North East where it rains quite a bit :(

So my main priority is wet grip and comfort. Obviously cost is a factor but by my reckoning the difference is about £100 a set

With these two, you cannot make a bad choice. ;)

Wet grip + comfort = GY Asym 3 to me, which is what I currently run (and I'm very pleased with them). I'll be fitting the PS4 next time though, just to try them out (I get through tyres at quite a rate).

I've just moved to GY Asym 3 on my 120d and I rate them as an all rounder. Not sure how they deal with power though

I spoke to my insurance company today about changing from run flats to non run flats

This was their reply:
"As long as the tyres meet the manufacturers specifications and requirements for your vehicle there is no affect on your insurance."

If I read this correctly I would have to fit Michelin Pilot Super Sports as they are the only tyre approved by BMW?

Yup, sounds like they want star rated tyres.

Tyres with a BMW star on the tyre wall. It means BMW have approved them, like Porsche N rated tyres.

Go to Camskill, they will have BMW star rated sections.

The star is to show that the tyre has been recommended for use on BMW, tyres are tested before being released, if they have the star marking on them then it means that BMW approved them for use of their cars, if they dont have a star marking on them then bmw has not approved them for use on their cars.

Ok, I have replied to my insurance email to get clarification.

As I understand their reply they did not state it had to be an approved tyre, just one to the same specification?

Interesting that the (albeit limited) poll results are identically split. I'd have thought the PS4's would have been way out in front. Guess I've not been paying attention to what Goodyear have been offering lately.
