Re: Winter Question

Post by ScoobyChris » Sat Sep 23, 2017 7:27 pm

The only car I've bothered with winters on was my E87 120d and that was mainly because everyone says BMWs are rubbish during winter months blah blah blah. Tbh, I didn't see a huge difference, but they were bought second hand with 4-5mm of tread which might explain that and I only used them for one winter and ran the summers the other with a couple of interesting moments that the ESP sorted out.

I don't need to be mobile but I'm considering getting some for the M-lite though because the car is worth a lot more, is a lot more powerful and I don't want to have to dawdle around, and I plan to keep it a good few years so the costs will balance out...

Will E46 MV2's fit on an M140i? I have seen talk that the spokes foul the m sport calipers? I have an E46 330d with performance 269 wheels with summer tyres, and MV2's with winter tyres (225 and 255) and if I could use the MV2's for my incoming M140i that would be great.

Severely doubt they'll clear your Calipers, I wouldn't travel a long way on the off chance.

If you do fancy them, trial fit both a front and a rear. The fronts are fatter, but rears bigger diameter.

As Marco mentioned.. 16's will not fit over M135 brakes as 17's have minimal clearance from my experience of having 17" 379 style alloys as seen below

I use the cheapest BMW option of 380 wheels with continental tyres. They do only come as 205 square set up and do squirm a bit under slightly heavier load. I ran them for 2 months last winter from around Christmas to end of Feb and found them fairly good. Let's be honest, in winter you can't really hoon all that much anyway. I think this year I will be putting them on if the forecast shows snow as I do need to stay mobile. Also try and buy used with the tpms and come resale you will get most of the initial outlay back.

I’ve been given a set of wheels and winter tyres from my brother who’s sold his 3 series :)

Problem is they are 225/45/18’s tyres, would these fit the 140 as I’m concerned about putting these on when they aren’t recommended fitment?

He’s said I can sell them on so I’ll just do that if you guys don’t think they’re useable and go down the pub instead when it snows :D

The speedo will be a little inaccurate, but they shouldn't rub.

Thanks Marco, I hadn’t thought about the Speedo tbh. I’ll be taking it easy for sure when the temp drops in any case. I presume as the actual radius is larger when I’m showing 70 I may be actually doing a few mph more?

Was more thinking about any insurance problems, or any other gearbox or diff issues etc. They are the recommended tyres with the star on genuine bmw wheels however. Thanks again :)

It won't be much, if the speedo says 70 the car will actually be doing 72.5 or something. Worth remembering if you're driving around Wales though, they set some cameras at 31mph!

Yup, you'd be wise to check with your own insurer before fitting.

A bit unfair setting a camera at 31mph, probably catch a few cyclists down my way

Cheers Marco, I’ll give my insurer a call.

Found this If it helps anybody thinking about using winters.
